Need help to properly thank someone
« on: October 30, 2009, 01:58:04 PM »
****************************************************************************
I feel a bit guilty that this post is a few months late but was reminded of it last night during a phone conversation.  I had a couple of youngsters with me this year at Brodaks who had expressed interest in the hobby to see what it was all about.  One of them,  Mason Brown,  was looking through the vendors tables at the older engines with interest in finding a few possibilities when a gentleman asked him if he was looking for an engine then gave him a Ringmaster that had hit the ground along with an LA .25.  He came and found me but we were unable to locate the generous person again and I foolishly did not protect the number on the plane like I should have.
Anyway,  I would like the thank that person very much and update him on what he started.   Mason - who had no real C/L experience - rebuilt the plane and was able to fly it before we left Brodaks.  I believe it has been rebuilt three times at this point and he has accomplished loops, wingovers and inverted flight at this time.  He has also taken a set of old plans and built a Barnstormer profile on his own.
I am going to try to attach a picture of him and the Ringmaster as it is now but would really like to know who gave him the plane.  Currently he is probably the most active member of our club.........

I remember the gift but for the life of me can't remember who did the giving. It was someone I know but not sure who.

If we knew his AMA number it would help.  Maybe the same person(Father and Son) Marvin Denny helped a few years ago.  I was not there again, so I wouldn't know.  Mason looks great with the Ringmaster.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

I too am like Bob, and I remember two boys running around with that broken RingMaster the day they got it from somebody. Both seemed very happy with the hand me down. #^
Seems like it was somebody setup on the corner close to Bob. Maybe go thru Control Like World and show him some photos of folks kind of like a line and see if he can point them out. Also I put up a slide show of Brodaks on youtube, he might be able to point them out there as well. :!

What were the original colors? I tried to take pictures of all the Ringmasters I saw but I may have missed a few. You could go over to my Brodak 2009 album on Webshots and see if there is a photo of it or maybe the donor was in the big group photo of old time fliers.

Guys,

I too was there and don't remember the person but I'll make you all a bet that he won't come forward.  Someone is going to have to spot him and tell on him.  The people that do this kind of thing don't do it for the recognition.  y1

Later,  John

That gentleman was Dennis Hastings.  He was telling me about it when he returned from Brodak this year.  He was hoping that this situation would provide the ability for a new pilot to continue to fly.  Hope that this little guy is doing well on the journey. #^

Tom,

I was just getting ready to tell the young man it was Dennis as well. Dennis was as pleased to give the airplane to you, as you were to receive it. Dennis is a great man, he has given me a plane as well, and is always there to help anyone that he can. It is people like Dennis that make me proud to be part of such a great hobby.

I hope you enjoy the Ringmaster.

This reminds me of the time I was starting out on the dark side playing with R/C.  I was just learning when a young man showed up with a plane.  He had just finished it and needed someone to test fly it.  Mr Meriwether got one of the instructors to check it over and fly it.  He was told to tell the young man what he was doing and why.

I asked Mr Meriwether for the story as the young man's Dad told him that the young man spent so much time putting it back together that he went and bought him a radio set plus engine.  It seems someone was trying to fly and not listening and crashed.  Pulled his radio and engine and put the rest in the trash can.  Byron said the young man walked over to the trash can and looked at the plane.  Then he just stood there.  The guy that crashed had left the field.  Finally after the young guy had stood there for a 1/2 hour, Byron asked what the problem was .  The young man wanted to know if he could have the plane.  Byron told him that once it hits the trash can and the original owner has left it belongs to who ever wants.  He said that young man pulled out every peice of wood out of the trash can and loaded it in the car.  By then his Dad was ready to leave.  Byron said it took that young guy a month to rebuild the plane with out any help.  Another modeler was created.

That is the Dennis I have come to know, respect, and love.  Dennis comes all the way from the coast to Muncie to participate in our FCM weekend and has left many times with airplanes he purchased stricktly to give away!
he's not only a fine gentleman, but really fun to fly with.
