Well the only good thing out of Covid19 is I cant do anything else at night but build. The dreadnought is finally done, small mod to the fuse top and vertical but other than that, stock Randy Smith design. Thank you Alan Buck y1 y1
Power is OS 46VF with Randy Smith supplied prop, pipe, venturi, and needle. I am an electric guy but wanted to try a piped airplane and I had the engine so seemed like a no brainer.
I guess I will get to fly it some day HB~>

That's a beauty.

Very nice!
I need to find me an art director to plan my schemes. Also need a canopy installer as I have butchered every canopy I have ever attempted. Both your scheme and canopy look fantastic.

Tim,
Great model.
Is there a Build someplace or progress photos? Possibly information on finishing?

Nifty Tim! I like that it's glow. Looks awesome. Can you post a cockpit picture?
Chris

It looks great, very nice!

Plane looks great. Summer is coming and the politicians will have to lift the socials bans. Wouldn't have the bans if people had some common sense. If you don't feel good, stay home. I know I miss going to the hobby shop. At Ace Hardware it was strange checking out with a piece of plastic plate separating the clerk from me and requirement to use plastic card to pay. Been so long since I've had cash I think I forgot what it looks like. Weather and work on shop has kept me from flying at our kind of remote circle.
Let us know once you get that first flight in. H^^

Nice job Tim!
I think you'll enjoy it!
Have fun!
-
Tim I you knew you would do the kit well and you did,

thank you
ps Sadie needs a beer thanks buddie LOL
-
Thank you all, Chris I will take some cockpit pictures and post
Also I forgot to mention the weight came out 60.5 oz's with tip weight even.
In regard to color schemes i just copy things I see, it may be cars, skis other weird stuff...I don't know, I may even copy other stunt designs by others that sub consciously like....who knows
-
Alan I may take you up on the PA.... but I want to try the VF first....I have heard many great things
-
a couple Cockpit views. It was a hard shot to take
-
Charles,
What would you like to know about the finishing...sorry there is no build.... i have to do so much of that kind of stuff for work... that is not fun for me but i am happy to answer any questions.
-
That's some nice work right there.

Very nice! This crap will all be over with eventually.

THAT is a great Dreadnaught, super color choices!! Here's a couple of pics of the Dreadnaught I just finished.

And the tigerwood back. (Bet it weighs more than yours does.)
-
Thank you Brett, that means a lot y1
Will, my other hobby is learning to play guitar.....that is patience at 55....but I keep at it
-
That's some nice work right there.
Dang right! y1
BEAUTIFUL job Tim, and great to see you take the IC plunge. ;D
-
Very nice Tim. Great weight too!
-
Tim,
Nice job. Is your field closed? I'm headed to the NVCL field Tuesday noon to keep up with the mowing and also "make sure the field is in good working order."
Hope you get out to the field soon,
Peter
-
Peter,
As of now yes we are officially closed..MD is still experiencing an uptick in cases so until we have at least a 14 day decline in new cases we are going to remain closed.
They keep changing the bar so who knows..... I am listening to and acting on the orders that the state provides.....my daughter is also a nurse and her floor is the Covid19 floor so.... she is making sure we do what is right.
I would love to see things open up....but I want to make it is safe and the in the best in interest of all people.
-
Tim Excellent job as always. hope to see it at your contest in august. George
-
Beautiful work Tim!! Outstanding weight also!
-
Tim.
Looks great! #^ #^ #^

Beautiful work Tim,hope we get to see it fly soon.
-
Beautiful ship, Tim. Then again, I wouldn't have expected anything less of you.
-
Thank you all very much...I hope it fly's true...I hope I get the chance soon.
Now off to painting my Gypsy....seems like pastel base colors are on my brain right now, Ill post pictures when done.
also building a few free flights so it may be a little while.
Thanks again everyone
-
Thanks for the pictures Tim! That looks amazing!
Chris

Dang! You do nice work! I just gotta get you to put a pilot in one of these: "hey, who's flying that plane??" (And it looks like you gave him a nice cockpit with all the instrumentation and controls....)
Can't wait to see your Gypsy! And hopefully will get to see you sometime this summer!
-
And its another IC airplane Scott with a Double Star 60.
Thinking about a retro look showing a lot of silkspan on the wings and stab
-
transparent silk dyed?
By the way, what was your finishing process? How do you avoid tape pulling up the previous finish? Any special things that we need to make sure we do to get as nice a finish? What's your clearcoat?
Thanks!
-
Looks like a possible 20 pointer! I guess, unless you go to the Nats, you probably will not know, now the John Brodak is gone. Looks great! #^ HB~>
-
Tim looks very good Good luck with it #^

Thanks Randy and John,
Randy I will call you this week to get some baseline setup tips before I run the VF46. It has only taken me a year and a half to get the plane finished since I bought the stuff 46 pipe and parts from you.
Just want to know nitro content, pipe length and how to measure that, and rpm's I should be seeing before launch.
Scott, and on the finishing process I have used the following:
Franks doctor exam paper silk span, Brodak buterate clear for the base, Brodak white primer....the stuff is heavy so I dont use on open bays, just on solid surfaces and then sand most of it off. Then brodak dope for color and auto 2 part clear.
Couple of notes, repairs if ever needed will be difficult because you need to sand off the clear over the repair before you repaint of it will curdle....but they can be done, just look at my chipmunk
Second: the biggest advice for paint adhesion I can give you is always make sure you base is clean of dust, grease, dirt before you start priming and painting....that causes 90% of paint pulling up problems, I use both Windex and Duplicolor prep solve to wipe down my silkspan and clear dope base before primer and then again after primer is sanded, and then tack everything off really well.
One other possible problem is not using compatible primer and paint system ....this not a must...but it helps eliminate that possibility....if you know what you are doing....which I dont.. you can mix and match so I just use compatible systems up to the clear phase
I also use Auto Air Brand water base paints and auto clear...most likely will use that on the gypsy. These are great for easy cleanup and no smell and great color choices and reasonably prices. there is a learning curve on spraying them...many lite coats to achieve coverage... That is what I used on my larger chipmunk with the tribal flame scheme.
OK I guess I have rambled on enough
-
That is an awesome build Tim! Can't wait to see it fly!

Is the Brodak white primer easy to sand? I just got some a week ago, but if it's heavy now I'm having second thoughts.

Chris with my experience using it on 3-4 airplanes now, it sands like butter, dusts off really well, and does not clog sand paper.
I have even sanded it in the same day after application and it still sands pretty nice.
When you open the can...it is thick but it only requires one coat to do the job...I brush it on all solid surfaces...again I do not use it on open bays...it would be to hard to sand off with out sanding through the silkspan....ask me how I know :)
-
Very nice work Tim. I like the graphic design. I have to say, your bench is much cleaner than mine.

I was thinking about spraying it on. Haven't tried that?
-
I have sprayed Brodak white primer thinned 50-50 or more, using Harbor Freight HVLP gun. Same result, sands easily, ready to sand same day as application.
Back to original post - beautiful model! Too bad it is too far from me to be able to see it in person.
-
Beautiful work Tim! It should fly very well.

Thanks Jim, Mike, and Derek,
Chris, I have never sprayed it just because the first time I brushed it on and it worked really well, and there was no spray dust to deal with. As Mike said I am sure it will spray just fine, just haven't feel the need.
On the positive side of spraying however, I suppose spraying light coats over the open bays would work well and help eliminate excessive coats of clear and still be easy to sand.....so many ways to skin a cat....no offence to cat lovers ;D
