New Contest in the Pacific NW-its a wrap
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:47:30 AM »
The NW Skyraiders will be hosting a new stunt contest at the Auburn Airport in Auburn Wa this Aug 21-22. This will be the first contest at the Airport (Dick Scobee Field) and we are hoping to make a good impression on the City of Auburn and the Airport Board who has made this wonderful venue available. We have had several successful Fun Flys at this venue and are hoping to expand our presence there next year. The Airport is in a convienient downtown area and is surrounded by plenty of eateries, casinos and hotels. The Airport clears the south parking ramp for us and cones off the flying area. The airport fencing keeps the spectators close but under control and parking is permitted inside the airport grounds for easy unloading.  The contest will be run similarly to our other stunt contest with OTS,  NW Profile Stunt and Classic Stunt run on Saturday and PA on Sunday. Awards will be given for 1st -3rd place. See attached flyer.
We would like to have a good turnout for this event so please consider this in you contest plans and give me a call if you have any questions. Pete Ferguson 206 930-6221.

New News! : I just spoke with the Airport manager and the Airport will be open and setup for practice Friday August 20th. So take a day off work and come on out to practice. I will be on site to help with logistics. See you then!

You folks in the east don't realize that the NW is really THE CENTER of C/L stunt activity.  Don't believe me?  Then come to the Northwest Regionals some year!

I agree with FLoyd...I just can't understand why here in Florida with all the old retired f_rts around that say they learned on C/L, that we don't get more participation.  There are some very good dedicated flyers but it seems that there should be more....even just flying sport.

Phil, it looks like you have a brand new field going in outside St Augustine. Looks like a good place for a contest. If I get another take apart plane to travel with I will come down and check it out.

Floyd, starting with the next issue of CLW there will be a column about the northwest.  It will begin with a brief history of important facts about the NW and will have a report on the Potland even t this coming weekend.

FWIW, I finally got the Rev.B info up on our website. It confuses me when you change the extension in midstream. Also, it's a great place where simple helps. "Scobee-10.pdf" or "Scobee_10.doc" is way cooler to do in html code than "Auburn Contest August 2010.pdf"...less potential errors, especially for the short term memory challenged & Social Security eligible.  ;) Steve

Randy, Its pretty easy for you. I-5 north to SR18 go east to SR 167, go 1 exit North to 15th st NW . Head east on 15st and the airport is on your left (north). Turn at D st NE (US Bank , Iron Horse Casino, jack in the Box ) and go 1 block to the airport gate.

Mike Haverly and I will be there Friday Aug 20 in the AM setting up ~9:30. Feel free to come over and practice if you like.

It does seem strange that we don't have more participation here than we do. We used to hold the KOI here in Miami at Masters Field. Of course, that was in the 60's.

In case you needed another reason to come to this contest. All contestants are invited to Hike Haverly's house for spagetti dinner and socializing after the contest Saturday evening. Mike lives only a few minutes from the airport. I will publish maps via email.
WE will skip going to Las Margaritas in place of going over to Mike's.

Well, Saturday was fun, the party at Mike Haverly's home was great. But the pinched nerve in my neck decided to act up and I didn't make it for the Sunday Festivities today. Glad I'm seeing the chiropractor tomorrow. This is getting old. The Ringmaster Deluxe preformed well on Saturday other than some teething problems I'm still working out. Hopefully it will preform well next month at the Raider Roundup.

The party at Mike's was great, except for the Whoopie-cushion collapsible chairs Mike had planted outside.  You put a tenth of a ton of man on one of those things and they do an amazing prolonged crunch.

This pinched nerve in the neck thing is rampant...first PW, then me, Bruce Perry, Randy Powell... >:(

FWIW, I first went to a Chiropractor (Paul's). Short term (1-3 days), it helped. Decided to try PT. Short term (1-3 days), it helped. Went to my GP. He said he didn't approve of Chiro for the neck, and sent me for an MRI and cortesone injection. That helped for some weeks. But I've been told that it helps less and less with each shot. I need to get another, anyway. But it's not as bad as it once was.   :P Steve

Jeez, I thought I had a patent on the pinched nerves excuse.

It was really nice contest. Excellent weather and interesting airplanes on the taxiway as well as the pits. Food and drink fell readily to hand. You could sit on the asphalt and not even get dusty. Congrats and thanks to Howard, Pete F, Dave and all the others for making it work well. See Flying Lines for results and pix.

Condolences to pferg for winning the ka-boom award.

John, the condolances are to go to Dave G it was his plane, it was a loner, its now a goner.
I'll write up an article for flying lines. But to make it short, we had three days of flying. The weather was mostly great with patches of acceptable. Six members showed up fri 9:30 to set up cones etc , which took all of 30 min. We practice flew until 3pm, then second shift arrived and flying continued until 7pm. john Witt crashed his E Vector only to show up sat with it repaired and ready to go ( apparently bare wood repairs are ok on electric).
Sat we flew 3 classes OTS (5 entries), NWProfile (6 entries) and Classic (9 entries). Dinner was at Mike and Mikko Haverlys and there was a good crowd filling the living room, back deck and his shop. Food was excellent, Howard R provided the entertainment.
Sun we flew only 2 PA classes Advanced (8 entries) and Expert (7 entries). One intermediate flyer was folded into the Advanced.
We used the new Phototrophies software to generate the awards on site. Thanks to Dave G it worked well and there wasn't any waiting around to process the awards,.... . And they looked marvelous.
Nothing but positive comments about the site. Cars slowed down to watch, full scale pilots came by and a few ex CL spectators popped up.
Many thanks to Dave G , Mike H, Steve H, Hube Start , Keith Varley, Dan R , Ben Jones for their time judging and working to keep things moving.
We will do it again next year.

Thought it would be good to show off the trophies that were awarded...generated onsite as the results were determined. Many will recognize the background photo of Crist Rigotti, taken by Dennis Vander Kuur a couple of years ago at the NATS. It's on our website's homepage, but is actually one of the "canned" background choices that comes with the software...from Bob Reeves. Some will recognize our District 11 Dictator, and NATS Judge, Bruce Hunt. He done won Classic yet again...

Our cracked team of Engineers (Dave Gardner, Pete Ferguson, and Howard Rush) figured out how to make it all work, with DG doing a lot of the work...and buying the software. You don't wanna ask where we got the 110v. power to run the computer and printer...   VD~ Steve

Randy, "The Scobee" was the trial run with the process, and it worked out very nicely. You can smile in Chehelis.
Will Mark or Pat be coming over?  The money is in the bank for the "Crock Pot" (which has been won by both, as I recall, plus Jeff Rein, maybe?).

Same awards, probably with an alternate "mat" background for the Stevenson Memorial Raider Roundup on Sept. 11 & 12. We'll be needing photos suitable for those backgrounds, eventually, so if anybody has any photos that might be suitable, holla!  H^^ Steve

Steve,

Pat is not coming (too much new wife and home improvement). Mark may come.
