New bird
« on: June 11, 2011, 03:16:26 PM »
NOVAR,  well thats what the plan said before I started messing with it.    I started this project right about the time the Thundergazer article appeared in Stunt News.  So I decided to make the numbers closer to the Thundergazer than the Novar.  I cut about 1.5" off of each wing tip (foam cores) to reduce area from 685 down to around 650.  Also increased the tail moment from 17 to 18.  Other mods were to the fuse to accommodate a Sullivan R-8 tank, which required increased fuse width (3/8) and depth (1/4), had to use 1.5" rise header.  Came up with an unusual tank mounting and adjusting setup, the tank rotates instead of the usual shiming up and down. Will post some pictures on that later.  Also put the canopy on back a$$wards.  Power is PA65 on pipe (eventually), will make initial flights with header muffler.  Weight 71.5oz     :'(    sure wish I knew where that extra 8oz came from.  Well at least it should penetrate real good.

Sooo,
You increased the weight and significantly decreased the wing area. Hmm, Hmm.

Novar tank install

In 1st picture you see 2 aluminum tapered plugs mounted in F2.  This was a 1/4" dia. aluminum stand off (electronic hdwe I salvaged from printer or computer or somethin) about an inch long that had 4-40 threads in each end.  I cut it in half and then tapered them to make it easy for the cf tubes to slip on.  They are mounted to F2 with 4-40 socket heads from the rear.   CF tubes are 1/4" ID,  have 3 orings on each for cushioning.  Mounting height of tubes is such to give a little crush to make it snug so the tank doesnt rotate without loosening the 2 mounting screws at the front.  Tank is plumbed for uniflow, so all I have to do is loosen two screws at forward angle ply bracket and rotate tank for height adjustment.   ;D
Tank is Sullivan R-8.

Allan,

That'a a terrific job....the paint scheme really "pops"!  Would be interested in some of the paint details, please.

Great workmanshop and very creative engineering on the tank mount/adjustment arrangement....clever.  Let us know
how it works out for adjustment.

I've heard the "Novar" name, but I don't know who the designer is.   Is this an original design?

We would appreciate any other photos that you would like to share with us.

Cheers.

Paint job >> used automotive lacquer primer surfacer for base, primary color is Randolph white dope, trim colors are Brodak, Randolph 1690 clear coat.

Novar is one of Randy Smiths older designs.  The plans are dated 1993..

I dont think I'm smarter, just updating an older design based on more current trends and the design that won the 2008 World Championship.    n~

Allan,

Very nice. I like the paint scheme, it's effective. Sounds as if you and I are about in the same place wing loading wise. Sigh....

Great looking model and clever tank mounting scheme. Workmanship clearly excellent.

I also like the color scheme. Dollars to donuts this will fly beautifully as well.

Good luck!

I went back re-read the initial post five or six times, and no where does he say that he is smarter than Billy or Randy.

Maybe he is just razzin a bit.   He did make a lot of changes to  proven design.  But, that is modelling.  Trying things and having fun. H^^

Im an adherant of ' coustom ' inclinations , if they further the development .
After all , vehicals are one giant compromise . Otherwise why would Ferrarri's have Mufflers , indicators and other supuflous componentry.
I hear some even have Heaters . Obviously Unnessesary .  H^^

Ya know, looking as some of Allan's innovative ideas, he really needs to hook up with Derek Moran. They clearly think similarly.

While I like the black/yellow/white, I'm not sure I like the back'ards canopy, especially the yellow paint on it. Silver or charcoal would have been nicer, IMO.  Otherwise, it looks really neat. The tank mount is clever and unique. Putting the AMA nummers on the left wing is not per the AMA rules, sorry.  D>K Steve
