Maark, I only met your dad at a few contests that I have attended, but I could surely tell he was a quality guy.  We'll miss him in the flying circles and I'm sure he's in a better circle now.

Hello Mark and family,
Larry seemed to me to bring an irrepressible zest for life combined with a relentless curosity about the world and a impish sense of humor that he enjoyed sharing with all of us. Watching Larry and Howard Shenton trading friendly "zingers" with each other was always great fun for everyone and judging by the twinkle in his eye it was more fun for Larry than for anyone else. Larry will most definitely be missed by us all.
I pray that God send his comfort and blessings to help you through your time of grief.

Mark,
My condolences to you and your family. I think I remember seeing your dad at Brodaks this year? And I have read  his post, and replies. I was not as lucky as others here and did not know him other then the post here on the boards. I do not recall him ever posting a cross word about anything to anyone.
Seemed like a cheerful soul.

God Bless.

We are all saddened at Larry's passing.  We have fond memories of his wry humor, joking, and just fun to be with personality. We are one less in fellowship.  The Metrolina Control Line Society has lost an asset.  Larry could solve about any mathematical problem related to our hobby. He knew Pythagoras, Newton, and Steve Hawkings.  He may have even known Galileo for all we know.  We are going to miss him.  All of us send condolences and lift prayers for the family.  May the family find peace from our Lord during this time and may he help all through the grieving time.        Duck

I am sorry to hear about Larry's passing.  I first met him about 1962, when we both lived in Indiana.  He may have been too modest to tell you, but he was National Open combat champion in 1965, back when combat was the most competitive control line event, with a hundred or so entries at the Nats.

I hope there's a place way up in the sky
Where pilot's can go when they have to die.
A place where a guy could buy a cold beer
For a friend and a comrade whose memory is dear.
A place where no doctor or lawyer could tread,
Nor a management-type would e'ler be caught dead!
Just a quaint little place, kind of dark full of smoke,
Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke.
The kind of place that a lady could go
And feel safe and secure by the men she would know.

There must be a place where old pilots go,
When their wings become heavy, when their airspeed gets low,
Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young.
And songs about flying and dying are sung.
Where you'd see all the fellows who'd 'flown west' before,
And they'd call out your name as you came through the door,
Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad,
And relate to the others, "He was a good lad!"

And there through the mist, you'd spot an old guy
You had not seen in years, through he'd taught you to fly.
He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear
And say, "Welcome, my Son, I'm proud you are here!
For this is the place where true flyers come
When the battles are over, and the wars have been won.
They've come here at last, to be safe and alone,
From the government clerk , and the management clone;
Politicians and lawyers, the Feds, and the noise,
Where all hours are happy, and these good ol' boys
Can relax with a cool one, and a well deserved rest!
This is Heaven, my Son. You've passed your last test!

After the first time I met Larry at the Huntersville field I truly hoped we would become friends. Over the past couple of years i relied on Larry several times to explain stuff to me that i was embarrased to ask others. Being a newbie to the sport I always saved these questions for the next time I would see Larry as he always had a way of making me feel like "hey, i just learned that myself". Several times i have sent Larry an e-mail about a new design i was dreaming up with questions , usually sometime in the middle of the night he would respond with an excel spreadsheet listing things like Mac,Tvc and such , then i would call him and ask what does that mean , he would just chuckle and explain. One of the many cool things about Larry was when he said i really like your new airplane or new tank fix or whatever, was that you could tell he was really sincere. I am so very proud to be in that last picture taken at Huntersville with my friend!  My prayers and blessings go out to Larry's family and everyone that he touched.  Ray Copeland

As an aspiring Combat flyer in the early '60s I knew of Larry and also knew that when his name was in the list I didn't want to have to fly against him! And then I got old a started to fly Stunt and once again I learned of Larry! Only this time the competition was less intense and the gatherings more friendly. One of my happiest moments was getting reacquainted with Larry at the Brodak Contest of 2009 and again in 2010. He truly was a fine and neat gentleman to know and to appreciate. I guess you might say that he and I bracketed our model airplane flying careers together!

To Mark and the Fulweider Family my prayers are with you and I know that your lives have been truly enriched by this fine man. God bless.

This is fro the local Concord, NC newspaper

Larry Dean Fulwider

Larry Dean Fulwider was born on March 26, 1942, in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Ray Benjamin Fulwider and Virginia Mae (Hole) Fulwider.  He died at home, surrounded by family, on Sept. 12, 2010, in Concord, N.C.

Growing up in Crawfordsville, Larry graduated Crawfordsville High School in 1960, and went on to study engineering at Rose Poly Tech in Terre Haute, Ind.

Larry began his 44-year career with R.R. Donnelley in Crawfordsville, Ind. He was a leader in the 1980 Harrisonburg, Va., startup, and retired, thousands of spreadsheets later, in 2004.

Larry was blessed with a great family: his wife, Linda (Van Hook) Fulwider and four children, Mark Fulwider and wife, Pam, of Concord, N.C; Joni Riggin, and husband, Tony, of Rockville, Ind.; Laura Ann Puffenbarger and husband, Al, in Sugar Grove, W.Va.; and Brandon Fulwider and wife, Teri, of Waynesboro, Va. Larry's legacy includes a multitude of grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

He was a committed member of the Metrolina Control Line Society at Waymer Field in Huntersville, N.C. Larry's passionate control line flying involved him in various competitions along the Eastern Seaboard over the last few years. On any wind-free day, Larry could be found in the middle of the flying circle practicing his stunt routines. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Larry's epitaph: "I always thought outside the box...  now I'm stuck inside one!" J by Larry Fulwider

The family will receive guests at Hunt and Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, Ind., on Friday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The graveside service, officiated by Pastor Paige King of Salem, Va., will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

I met Larry in 2008 at Huntersville. We chatted casually and he impressed me as a most interesting as well as a techinically competent gent.

When at Brodaks in 2009, I overheard him say something that got my attention: "Nuts, Bolts, Screws, Gears"
Then I remembered the rest of it: "We are Poly Engineers". It was the chant/slogan of Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Turns out, we went to the same engineering school.
He was two years ahead of me in, as I recall, Mathematics. I was in Mechanical Engineering.
A small private engineering school in a nondescript midwestern town - what are the chances?????????????

After that, we became much closer friends.
