Title: New Aerodynamic Anouncement!
Post by: Charles Kourmpates on June 18, 2007, 08:18:31 PM
Well, maybe not new aerodynamics, but something worth sharing.

It's not every day someone makes an announcement about CL stunt. Especially when no one knows who you are. :-) That's for sure!

However, I shared this with Howard Rush today and decided to tell the stunt world.
In 1962, I built a modified Aries with a twin boom. The really unique aspect of this design, was my "wing tip tab."

Never heard of it, I know.

The tab was a working control surface that moved in the opposite direction of the ailerons. On the Aries Twin, it was approximately 3.5" long. The Thunderbird required a longer one. Yes, I had this "wing tip tab" on many of the models I built and flown. Including a Flite Streak with a shortened tail moment.

A difference in performance? Absolutely.

Unfortunately I moved to R/C early on and never looked back at CL to see if anyone else had thought of such a device.

Well, there you have it.

Experiment, try it out, and go have fun.

I'm just looking for the credit of the idea and the credit for being the first person to use this "wing tip tab." Which I first used in 1962. Remember who invented it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Anyone want information, I'll be glad to share it.

Don Hartman, my childhood friend and CL flying buddy, is holding my design.

Don passed away a year later in 1963.

A couple of questions

1) How is it connected to move in the opposite direction to the flaps?
2) Are they on both wingtips?

Kind of an interesting topic- please disclose more.

Placed on the outboard wing only. Operates from a pushrod off of the main belcrank to another belcrank in the wing tip. A control horn on the Wing tip tab allows for throw adjustment.

Not much is needed. I had about a 3.5" tab with a .25" throw, on my modified Aries.

A larger one on my Thunderbird.

 Hey, remember, this was 1962!

 Just remember who invented it.

Charles...are you this Charles Kourmpates? It would not surprise me a lot.  I still can't figure out why people mostly can't pronounce "Porsche" correctly. The 'e' is NOT silent. Just like "Harlee Davidson"!   LL~ Steve
