I will be performing some work at Holloman AFB Apr-May of this year. I am able to bring my planes along so I was wondering if there are any fliers locally?

Seems to me I remember somebody posting here or over on Stuka about flying in La Cruces, New Mexico, which isn't too far. That is an interesting area, and hope to get back there and look around some more, visit White Sands and such. Outstanding view coming over the mountains from La Cruces and looking down on the valley floor.

Thanks Dan,

It's different down that way and pretty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. I grew up in an area with large trees and lush green grass so when I am in in NM I often wonder how folks from there don't become depressed. I suppose if you grew up there you would look at it differently.

Hopefully someone is there and will post back.

In the PAMPA site is a list of members that used to be by state. I know there used to be some members in Los Cruses and also in Alamagordo. I know Billy Melton was from Las Cruses, but left this world quite a few years ago. He is still missed. Hope fully someone will speak up.

Sadly, there is no longer a C/L field in Las Cruces and no C/L fliers for several years. It was a good contest for many years.
I'm in El Paso, and the only true C/L flier here. On occation, one or two guys at an R/C field will fly, but that's about it.

Well Pardner, We Cowboys like those Wide Open Spaces and fantastic sunsets...We have a replacement for those trees called Cactus...big ones!
So SMILE when you say bad things about our country!

I re-read what I wrote and it sounded condecending, sorry about that. I certainly meant no disrespect. It was just my view from an outsider looking in. What do I know anyway....

Randy, if I had stuck to my guns and told the family where to get off I would be with you guys. The mpountains ranges always fasinated me as well as the Saguero Cacti. Driving from Kansas to Arizona it was really enjoyable asthe scenary changed. But then I would have to give up my riding mower.

Ron, the AMA website lists the Alamogordo RC'ers as a club there. Check out their website at http://alamogordorcers.com/home.htm and select Flying Field. The pic clearly shows a ukie circle. Get in contact with one of the officers and I bet they'll be happy to let you drop in and fly.

No Worries Ron! I was just poking you for fun. To each his own. I've lived in a lot of places in the world and most of them have some great things about them and some not so great things about them...Except of course for Lybia...BOO, Bad Place, I'm never going back there!

I hope you find someone to fly with over there. If you get enough time and don't mind a long drive you could stop through Tuscon and fly with us any weekend and almost any weekday except Monday! Not sure why but no one flys on Monday here unless it's a special occassion.
All the rest there's usually someone at our great flying field. Winter and summer.

I have talking with Alan Robinson from Las Cruces, NM who flies at Jornado Field in Las Cruces and he mentioned a paved circle in Alamagordo the flies at some times.

Russ brought one of his planes to FL about 4 years ago and we enjoyed a great day of flying at the SpaceCoast AeroModeling Park / IRKS field in Cocoa,FL.

Nearest C/L club is "NMCCLA" or " New Mexico Coalition of Control Line Addicts". Their home field is Maloof Airpark on the west side of Albuquerque. Russ can fill you in on the rest. I was a member when I lived in NM.

Hi Ron,

We lived there for over thirteen years, and loved the place!

I was assigned to Holloman AFB until I retired in 75, and all four of our kids went to school on base, and later in Alamogordo.

Worked in the CIGTF area about five miles north of the base proper, and rode one of my motorcycles to work, and usually home for lunch almost every day for the last five years before retirement.

NM is a motorcycle Eden, with unlimited desert trails, local flat track racing, and frequent motocross races in the mountains, and unlimited logging trails in the mountains as well. Very little rain there, so the logging roads from the early thirties are still flat, and were easy to ride two up. I say were easy, because the small trees on those narrow gauge rail beds were no problem, but have had many years to grow since!

Carlsbad Caverns is only three hours away, and is really worth the drive. The place is riddled with limestone caves and even a few hard rock mines, so we did a bit of spelunking as well.

Leave your fishing gear at home!

Missed yas by a few years. Dad was Base Commander there from '46/'49. This was one of his CL models from that era.

Edit: Remembered a story my brother told, about a TDY he had at Holloman, from Edwards AFB. I don't know what he was doing there (sekrit) but he was called into HQ and told that since he was from Edwards, he was responsible for some visitors...security for their plane, crew quarters, provisions, etc. An SR-71 had to put down for an emergency landing there! A C-130 brought in mechanics, parts, equipment, etc., and I guess a KC-135 flew in with the special fuel. The plane was put under lock & key in a hangar with armed guards, etc. This would have been pre-'70, and nobody knew what the hell that thing was, and they intended to keep it that way!

Coincidentally, Dad's last duty station was Edwards ('61), and brother's first was Edwards ('67). Straight out of ROTC and into an engineering job on the arresting barrier. Some of you may have been acquainted with that in some capacity or other.

I was there that day, and watched the landing on my way to work. Some of the other guys in another car turned onto a side road, and tried to get closer to the runway for a better look, but were met by an armed jeep crew, and told to get the hell out of there!

Funny story about the SR-71 security. I was tending bar at the officers club that evening when the SR pilot stopped for a drink, and was immediately approached by a couple of cute nurses at the bar. They left together shortly after, and one of the nurses told me later that the SR pilot gave them a guided tour of the airplane in that guarded super secret hanger!

Ron, Russ Gritzo is one of our club members. I think it is worth the drive to come up and fly with us. I've mentioned the fact that your coming back to a few of the club members and were going to try and get together why you here. You have not been out to Maloof to our circle yet. Ya Pete I had to chime in, Ron came and flew with us last year when he was TAD to Cannon in Clovis. We didn't take George and Ron out to Maloof that time instead we went to a soccer field off of Gibson that one of our Combat fliers likes. I think Ron would enjoy a day out at Maloof. Hope your gonna make it for the August contest this year. I've been flying a lot, don't know that I've gotten any better but I'm having a good time and haven't crashed in a few months. Talk to ya later.
