Title: Need photos of "Old Yeller", the first version
Post by: Larry Renger on April 02, 2013, 10:39:39 PM
I have a couple of photos of the aircraft in the photo, but none show what decorations might be on the top and bottoms of the flying surfaces.  I bought all 3 photo packs from Bob's Aircraft Documentation, but they are all of the wrong, later versions.  Anyone out there have some photos or artwork that could help?

Could that be Bob Hoover's first Mustang?

The picture you have there is the airplane after Bob Hoover sold it. If you do not find something I will go back into my Reno slides and see what I can find.

  The photo in the original post is a vintage image, note the North American Aviation logo on the tail. The last time I saw Old Yeller, was in the configuration in one of the photos that is in the long link in the second post, where it's wearing the #47 race number, but it doesn't have the "RA Bob Hoover" on the wings. Check all the Reno Air Race websites for photos. They used it for a pace plane for a lot of years and Hoover always performed in the air shows there. Back in the 80's it was kept here at Lambert Field at a North American Rockwell hanger on the eats side of the field, and the owner of the hobby shop got permission to extensively photograph it at one time, but the photos have been lost over the years (Dammit!)
    Good luck and have fun,

Are you going to use this scheme for your little Mustang Electric?

The other photo I have has Bob standing on the wing, so I expect he was still flying the plane at that time.  It is my guess that this is the earliest of the deco schemes.

I have seen all of the photos flagged so far and none of them are of this specific color scheme.  The side photos I have are adequate, I just need to know what were the wing markings.

And yes, I do plan to decorate my RSM P-51 in. this scheme.

Still no joy in finding photos of this specific version where the wing artwork, if any, is visible.  Any new clues out there?  The photo packets I purchased ($110 down the drain) are all of other versions.   HB~>  ~^  :'(

A tantalising glimpse of the top of the starboard wing but I guess it's no more help than what has gone on before sorry. :(

   Hi Larry;
    I have been looking for an finally found a booklet I got off eBay called, "Bob Hoover....The Pilot's Pilot....The Man and His Airplanes." It's only 24 pages long, but has many photos of all the different types that he had flown in addition to his air show mounts. On the back cover is a sequence of shots and one is from behind and slightly from the left side. It is a bit cropped, but the only thing I can see on the wings is the black wing walk. There is another shot in the book, taken in flight, from the left side and above that shows a good portion of the wing, and there is nothing visible on either wing, such s emblems or "N" numbers. If I can figger out how to use my scanner again, I'll try to send you scans. A quick check of his book "Forever Flying" shows one shot from underneath that shows no markings. It was taken from the left side during one of his "Tennessee Waltz" one wheel landings and gives a good view. So if you got good shots from both sides, that should be all you need, and with nothing on either side of the wings, no need for photos in the photo packs! Nothing to show! The black wing walk looks to be about 12 to 16 inches wide, and goes from the flap hinge line and stops about 12 or 16 inches from the leading edge. Hope this helps.

This reminds me of when I doing a semiscale Comanche for when I was still playing with RC.   Went to the downtown airport and got permission to go take photos of the real Camanche.   Only markings was on the fuselage including graphics.  The wings were a solid white.

Hi Larry,
I don't have anything newer than 1969 in my own photos but I saw the airplane perform during the period from 1969 till the '90's and in those early times as the NAA airplane I do not believe it had large wing markings. I think once the company was bought by Rockwell the markings on the wings began. That may have been when the new airplane was bought, I cannot remember exactly but I think the old ship was sold off after an accident at Transpo 1970. Hope this might help as some anecdotal history.
Chris...
