A Good "Read"
« on: January 21, 2013, 07:17:10 PM »
I took an old "friend" to Office Max a couple days ago, and it's looking and working better than ever.

My well-worn copy of Tom Morris' Classic Era Construction Drawings, a PAMPA publication, had been losing too many pages due to continued use over the years. Surely it's a book every stunt or CL model enthusiast should have at hand; as a reference work, it answers so many questions posed on the forums, but it's a lot of fun too! Anyway, I'd been planning this for too long - 'finally did it. For a bit over $4 it is now spiral bound and easier than ever to handle, without nearly the wear. It opens flat now. I've just finished spending some more happy time enjoying the work of our CL classic stunt designers. I think it's time for an update and another volume with newer models too.

 That's a great idea Serge!

I've wanted a copy of the Tom Morris Classic book for quite some time, I'm jealous. y1

Great idea Serge and yes, it's a very good read.

How did you get rid of the perfect binding? Did you simply guillotine the spine to remove the hot melt adhesive or is there a much more clever way?

No cleverness here, Geoff!

The middle pages fell out of their own accord. Most of the rest were coaxed out likewise. The bound edges are slightly notched, just as they were cut. The problems came up on the edges near the covers, where the glue had seeped in some. It mostly pealed off. AT the covers, the glue was impossible to remove entirely. The OfficeMax person was able to punch the cover wholes separately with help from a cardboard backing, but there was some apparently inconsequential damage to the first and last paper pages. So I got away with it. It seems that they could have sliced those edges off all pages, if it were necessary. Anyway, I like the results; it's a lot easier to use than when it was new.

Thanks Serge. My concern was exactly what you describe at the covers. I've used that binding system extensively—even have a 'cooker' in my office—so when mine starts to fall apart, I know what to do.

And yes, much easier to use when you can fold flat.
