Navy Millingtion Hobby shop??? Back in the days
« on: May 20, 2007, 08:02:50 PM »
I remember back in the 70s a hobby on the Navy base in Millington, Tn with a building area in the back. And on the side was a flying circle. When my mom would go to the PX, I would have her drop me off at the hobby shop. As a kid I would stand in the door and the smell of dope and ambroid glue would hang in the air. I would have my little cox plastic P-51 plane, and wait for my turn for the flying circle.
Did anyone take any pictures back in the hay day?

Nope, wish I had. I was stationed there for "A School" in 1969. Loved that hobby shop, my barracks was about 2 blocks away I think, anyway it was close, spent a lot of time there.

Navy VA-216 Black Diamonds, 62 to 66, we had a hobby shop on the base (NAS Lemoore) and aboard the carrier (USS Hancock CVA 19).. It was great and the prices were unbelievable.

Yes...I checked into Millington in the spring of 70--went through AV"A" and then TD "A"  then out to the War College in the Fall.  I kind of took the speed route through!!

Spent some time at the hobby shop too..

I found an old Voodoo, black if I remember, that someone before me had left.  Got it going and flew it to the delight of many there!

What a nice PX also..it was my first taste of "real" base life after Great Lakes.

GO NAVAL AIR!

Man, talk about some memories. I went through there in the summer of ,86 and it was probably the same building you all were in with a wood shop and storage on one side and a hobby shop and model building area on the other. They had a track for r/c offroad out the back door and to fly we walked over to the old turn line that the nosepickers had used for engine turns. It was a nice asphalt strip that we flew r/c off of with a huge grass area next to it for control line but not to many were into it so it was hardly used. I guess times change. Now it's the Bureau of Naval Personnel. %^@
