battery question

OK, for you electrical genius types (I freely admit I know nothing).

Is there such a thing as a non-rechargeable (as in alkaline or similar - Duracell/Energizer) sub-"C" battery? All I can find in this size are ni-cads and NMiH types.

Hi Randy, I'm no expert either but just had a look on www.duracelldirect.co.uk and they have the 'c' type alkaline batteries (code MN1400) you're after. Hope this helps.

Yea, they are standard "C" sized. These are sub-"C". They are smaller than "C" cells. Used in glow plug igniters. I just found it strange that you can get them in ni-cad and NMiH and other rechargeable forms, but not as a regular use once and dump type of battery. Just make it easier to have a couple around when you're rechargeable type dies and you don't have a charger with you.

I've got so many NiCad cells around from making my own 6-pack sticks, that I used to carry charged extras in my box, just in case of moments when you find yourself with a dead one. Even if its been sitting around for awhile, there was always enough charge to get a few flights. I now use a SuperShot 5000mh igniter .... charge it at the most once a month. That thing is great!

Now you know why one of my ni-cad head lock battery is in the woods up in Iowa.  I use a pit box with power panel and 12  volt battery.  Oh I still one ni-cad in the box.  DOC Holliday

I use the sub C ignitors but I also make a battery pack out of 4 D cells.. it lasts a long time and never needs "recharging" .. plus I feel it gives the plug a little more fire than 1.2v..   1.5v. I still will use one but it sucks when they die. Maybe a solar charger is the answer..

Randy I think the answer is no. I looked a few years ago when I had one of that type.
 Radio Shack makes some single C or D size holders that allow easy alkaline cell replacement. I used two glued together and wired in parallel for a reserve pack . It lasts a full season easily with 2 cells and isn't as cumbersome and heavy as soldering together 4 cells.

As you know, I use a flight box with power panel and 12V battery. Problem is, on those cold days we fly, we often have to flip the plane over to start and my lead wire isn't nearly long enough to reach from the panel to the plug. So have a small igniter is often the best thing. It was just curiosity. I thought either I was looking in the wrong place for the battery, or one wasn't made. And if that is the case, I just thought it was kinda weird that a sub-"C" would be available in one and not in the other type.

Use the one I do - Duratrax makes a empty glo ignitor - just put in your own standard "C" or "D" 1.5v alkaline cell.
I believe Tower (or someone) makes one for AA 1.5v alkaline cells.

For those using "C" size NiCd cells, check the capacity when replacing them. Some C's are actually sub-C cells with spacers so they will fit in C applications.
