Title: Nats report (Pics added updated 7-15)
Post by: RC Storick on July 10, 2008, 07:33:16 PM
Thursday 7-10. The crew is on their way to Saint Louis. They should arrive around 5:00 Fri Night. I have been packing and got the car loaded. Airplanes are shined and ready (as its going to get) for the beauty contest. One more day of work "sigh" Then 10 days of do as I please. Most of which will be flying with my friends. This year I have packed my camera equipment. I will be posting everyday.

Beginner flying went off great. Allen did his usal great job. Apperince judjing opted PTG a 20 point plane (congrats Phill) Yours Truely got 18 no too bad.

PAMPA Meeting went without a hitch. The NEWS was made public that Bob Hunt will be taking over the Editorship of Stunt News

I'll try to format the data better when I have time.

Here are Open results. This board removes spacing, so it's difficult to make columns come out right.

Good luck Sparky. Wish I could be there but alas, it's not to be.

Will be watching for your reports.

You should probably pin this topic to the top of the page.

Thanks, Sparky for remembering "Your Buds on the Board"  Good Luck. Really you don't need luck. What you need is to put in a few flights that are as good as you are capable of.

Am I correct when I count 33 entrants in Open? Will the next round still be for the top 20. Looks like an easier mark to achieve this year compared to past years.

Looking at the score sheets it appears as if some of the big guns are missing in action

Hunt
Werwage
Fitsgerald
Fancher
Walker
Bear
Whitely

To name a few. Where are these guys?

Well, Paul Walker is the Event Director this year, and Ted Fancher is one of the judges.  So that's two.

I think Dave Fitzgerald skipped the Nats this year, since the World Championships is next year.

Also, Bob Whitely just flew at Brodak's.

The rest ... don't know.

That reminds me ... haven't seen Bill Werwage's name at a Nats or Team Trials either this year or last year.  ???  Hope he's OK?

I have given it my best shot. I guess I can try again next year. I was beaten out by Steve Moon by 1.67 points in making the top 20. Oh well good Luck to all.

Just to set the record straight.  I should be judging but knee surgery on the 1st of July has me sidelined for a while.

Robert,

Looks like you are knocking on the door. Good show.

Also, congrats to my mentor.. John D'Ottavio is still flying and judging at 85! He is having lots of fun doing it too. He was a constant winner in the 60s, and he is still first in my book.

Ted,
Sorry about your knee, hope all went well.

ALSOOOO,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to TED.. I don't know the exact date, but it is around NATS time.
He will always be older than me!

Well I see we are getting comments from people that were not at the NATS and probably will never be.  Sure there were a lot of top name flyers that were busy doing things or recovering.  By the way the Worlds is this year and Paul has to go to a back up.  It was great to see Sparky and his Dad.  Also that XL is a 20 point plane in my eyes.  Did not stay for the banquet as I had a chance to get home a couple of days early courtesy of Dave Trible.  We had quite a talk on the way home and he agrees that he has been out of the loop too long.  He was hoping that he would be remembered, but, he stated that he didn't even know half the people there.  Anyway I got to come home early as there were not that many sells happening.  Melvin let me fly Classic and that was his biggest day.  I guess I was driving people off.  Got to meet a few new people and wish I could remember all the names I already knew.  From where we were set up I could see some of the flying on the official days.  On the practice days it looked like Mike Palko was going to be the first with electric power.  I do not know what happened.  Of course there a lot of entrants that looked really good in practice.  My local guy, Howard Terrell, took a second in Intermediate, so I guess he will be looking for a new coach.  And seeing the smile on Terry Bolin's face was enough to make me feel proud to know him as winner in Open Beginner.  Anyway I am tired and glad to get to a computor that doesn't send posts off into cyber space.  Now I hope Sparky will stay with it.  DOC Holliday

Patrick Rowan (thank you, SIR!) was kind enough to email me a picture of Howard's 9 year Impact, taken at appearance judging. I took a lot of time to crop it and compress it to just under 50kb (to post on SSW) and at 118kb, to post here. I can hardly stand to look at the 50kb picture. The culprit appears to be the busy floor (lots of kb's absorbed there), but it makes the plane look crappy. I'm gonna post both, so you can see the difference.

Now, I've gotta say, Howard's new plane is smooth and shiny and spiffy and all, but I just don't like the Rubik's Cube look...too busy. I'm afraid I'm stuck with it for the next 9 years... LL~ Steve

Pretty plane, but the Microsoft Regedit icon look is definitely different to look at! LL~
I wonder what his inspiration was for this look!? Musta been a PIA to mask!

Howard generated a computer file, then had the masks cut at a sign shop (as with the old Impact). He didn't think it was that hard to do. Not much masking tape was used. I'm more into colored tissue stripes and stars, so I wouldn't know... :-[ Steve

Congratulations to Orestes!
