Title: NATS headcount
Post by: Matt Colan on June 22, 2011, 09:03:56 AM
We're leaving for the NATS in 10 days, and I was wondering who is going to be at the L-Pad in less than two weeks.

There will be two from Vermont, myself and my grandfather, Don herdman.

Depends on when the AMA opens up the field.  If I remember right there may be some events happening.  I remember the year of the Giant Scale competition.  They were flying over the L Pad as well as the other control line circles.   H^^

I will arrive there Friday 1 July for the Scale Static Judging then on Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July for Scale flying.  I will sleep in my own bed each night as I live only 70 miles away.

The picture is of my 88 In. WS Taube powered by an OS 91FS SII-P engine.  For size reference those are 5 Inch wheels.

We'll be showing up at the L-Pad Sunday around lunchtime.  We decided to stop overnight in Akron Ohio since a 15  hour drive is too much for us to do in one day.

We leave in 5 days and 22 hours!!!!!

You wimps,  a fifteen hour drive.  Several years ago went to Arlington TEXAS to taxes done by my Sister-in-law.  From there to Tuscon took over 19 hours.  The demented poodle couldn't hold herself that long.  Stopped several times to eat and fill the fuel tank.  Amazing how many miles you can cover at 80+ mph.  H^^

Yea I guess we could be!  But this is going to be the first time I'm going to be driving over long periods (2-3 hours at a clip).  Also grandpa can't take all that driving in one day anymore.  We'll be pulling a trailer so we should be averaging around 65mph when on the interstate.

You get used to it on the third 15-hour day.

I'm sure we would, The farthest we've traveled in one day was 12 hours and that's to get to Carmichaels, PA for Brodak's.  It'll take us 11 hours to get to akron ohio and then another 4 to get to Muncie.

Can't remember just how long it took Aaron and myself when we went to Muncie for the WC's in '04........ more than 12 hours for sure.  Might have an old friend to travel with who is an over the road trucker (we went to the NATS one year together, can't remember when it was! LOL!).  if so, I go to sleep and let him mark off the miles! LOL!!

Well im now in the USA.

Not without hassle....

With a 28 hr flight ...... Australia to LAX (6 hr lay over ) LA - Chicago - arrived at Chicago last night - there was supposed to be a 1 hour layover but after 2 hours an annoucncement came over the loud speaker saying the flight to Indianapolis has been cancelled. We tried to rebook - but they told us there was no guarentee to get a flight Sunday - or Monday we would be on Standby....

So I said &*#&@ that.... we rented a car and drove Chicago to indiana last night left at 12:10am and arrived into indy at about 3ish after stopping at Dennys for a midnight snack.  We couldnt get any of the aircraft equipemtn or baggage becasue they were "in transit" the idiot at United told me and I quote " your bags are on there way to indiana international as we speak" So we drove all the way down only to arrive at indy INTL to be told the bags are still in Chicago. United put us up at the Raddison hotel free of charge for the bags to arrive Sunday morning..

So after 4 hrs sleep we went back out to the airport today to be told that all my bags BUT ONE have arrived.. Wouldnt you beleiev it.. my plane box is still in Chicago !!!!!!!!! Apparently the box was too large to get onto a regular domestic carrier.. So in a few more hours 9:50pm local it will arrive so united have out us up in Indiana Raddison for another night whilst we wait for the Plane to arrive.

I have 1 take apart model which has arrived - and all my equipment.... YEE gods.. so after almost 36 hours in transit im IN Indiana.. but not at munice yet.. Im annoyed but what can you do.

Im sipping on a borbon and coke coutesy of management whilst im here.. - I think next year I will build a take apart.

Dont ask me about the 2 hours I spent at LAX customs......... getting the model scanned, poked, looked at ,observed, questioned and I think they gave the model a polygraph but I couldnt be sure.  ~>

Im just trying to get my head around the currency.. pennies.. quarters......... dimes.........   ~^ I got a pocket full of em !

Hopefully tommorow I will be in Muncie plane in tow - ready for my assault..... This trip has NOT gone to plan....... but im having a great time doing it :)

We just packed Joe Parisi and family into their hire car for SFO airport this morning after a grand week of them sightseeing San Fran and vicinity; staying with the Fitzgeralds and then us and getting some practice in.  They took off this AM for a week in New York and will be coming from there to Muncie.  David is carrying his (slightly modified) airplane with him.  Be sure to ask Joe about the "slightly modified" part and how close he came to wishing it had only been slightly!  I'll let him tell you.  The good news is that it is flying better now than before the event that precipitated the "modification".

Good luck to all,

Ted

3:47am local time.... cannot get to sleep - body is way out of the time zone.. Just got a burger from Steak n Shake.. still blown away that I can get a meal at 4am! Good ole 24/7

This is my 2nd trip to USA.... Despite my flight being cancelled, and my box being left behind - I have been REALLY well looked after, every local I've spoken to has been very nice, extremely courteous great conversations everywhere to be had with complete strangers. - So far ive had a great time being here. The old axiom of americans being rude, or arrogant is SO FAR from the truth the complete OPPOSITE actually.   Never have I been to a nicer part of the world where people bend over backwards to help you.

I thought it was just stunt fliers out here - no no from what i've experienced its everyone from the bus driver who helped me get my model box into the hotel ( and I might also add he just drove me to get my burger at 4am.. and refused my tip.. ) Even guys in the bar I was talking to, everyone is amazing - certainly makes me feel RIGHT AT HOME and that my 28 flight and headaches with customs have been well faded as a distant memory and reinforces why I had to come back.

Looking forward to getting out to have more fun flying.

Might try getting to sleep...  ???

Same here!!!!!  It's we leave in 4 days and 22 hours and it's already killing me!!  I got up at 7 this morning for absolutely no reason, so I went back to sleep.  Right now, there is absolutely no wind, and it's killing me that we have to wait until at least 11am before we fly because I don't want to wake up the neighbors.

PJ, I'm glad you're having a good time and meeting wonderful people.  Looking foward to seeing you in a few days!

From talking to Bob Hunt at VSC this year, go electric.  His neighbors don't even know he is flying in the neighborhood.   LL~ LL~  Now Matt don't to hyped up as it sounds like nerves are getting to you already.  Just tell yourself this is just another contest.  Now if after all the NATS I have been to, I could convince myself.  First was in 1964, flew carrier and combat.  Even the last NATS going courtesy of Melvin and Brenda I still got edgy.   So you and Grandpa have fun. H^^

Today we pack up the rest of the truck, and get our clothes together, do some last minute things before we leave, and get to bed early.

And leave it to Mother Nature to have it rain and the winds howl for most of this week, then today, when I get up, it's gorgeous outside; blue skies and very little wind!
