Title: Nats 2010 pictures coming?
Post by: proparc on July 20, 2010, 03:30:06 PM
While I know it is still early, is there any chance of 2010 Nats pictures on the way?

Jose,
Great photos!
Thanks so much for "The Fast Service".
Beautiful models but I sure miss the clear canopies with clever stuff inside.
I recall Tom Dixon had a Nobler, many years ago, with a clear canopy although the only thing under it was a type written note that stated "COCKPIT DETAIL".

Jose,
Which one is your plane and equipment?

Hey Milton. My model is the Yatsenko Shark with Retro 61LS running FAI fuel.63oz. This plane got a couple if nicknames( Snow White,Casper,Ghost) you get the gist.
This model is the easiest to fly, has the best corner but is hard  for me to fly well 10 flights in a row. i started flying this model one week prior to going to the Nat's as my all composite Vacuum bagged Impact Master 3 was not ready to go. the Impact Master was completed and flown but not painted the week prior to the Nat's. Impact Master 2 was flown this spring but developed a yawing  on very hard corners(remember Gean) like that so it was left home.
Here are photos of the Shark, Impact Master 2 and 3

Hey Milton. My model is the Yatsenko Shark with Retro 61LS running FAI fuel.63oz.

I judged a contest where one of the Expert cats was running a Retro. Motor was slamming. Big prop, low rpm, very quiet,(like the F3A RC ships) actually, it was the quietest motor there. Made it very easy to judge his flight because, he wasn't going a stinkin 100 mph!!

The Retro models actually tend to fly faster than piped planes- generally in the 4.9-5.1 range, although they slow down in the maneuvers. The tuned pipe planes are anywhere from about 5.2-5.5. It's a lot like the 4-strokes, they give the impression of a lot slower speeds than they are really going. They're much quieter than 4-strokes from our measurements, although the top Retro practitioners have made some modifications that get them more power but more noise from the stock setup.

Part of the lack of noise on the Retro is the fuel. FAI or 5% makes much less of a sharp "crack" when the port opens up. It was really striking on the Fox when we started running 15% - much, much louder and much harsher.

On some planes, it makes you wonder what the judges saw that the planes didn't get better points.   H^^

I attended this years Nat's and the appearance judging is always surprising as to model placing.
I don't know the criteria for judging PA or have i read the appearance judging manual created i believe by Keith Trotsle and claus M(not going to butcher his name like Keith's) so the following is just an opinion.
PA judges should not judge the appearance of the models as this gives a small sample of the judges a double influence on the outcome of the contest(they get to judge twice.) This obviously can only happen if volunteer's are available.

Second like the flying portion of the event judges use their own interpretation of what is good and not a commom set of beliefs or facts.
This is why appearance judging is always interesting specially when the doors are first opened and you see the rows, I first look at the front row and then find my own plane. The following for me is to become and amateur Nat's appearance judge and say why is this here i would have put it there just like every one else.
My impression is that all planes from 18 points to perfection the owners are happy. Row 17 and 16 is where you find the models that you would move
Row 15 and back are the guys that would fight to go from 14(me) to 15 point row. I have a couple of examples.
Photo #1 Stan Powels Impact Stan former Concourse winner
Photo #2 18 point row
Photo #3 Frank mcmilland model  16 pts

That would be my Shark, about 10 years old now and showing it.  I didn't plan to use it but do to last minute problem had no choice.  I've almost got the new plane ready to put in the air, so maybe next year.
