Sorry If This Is a Dumb Question...
« on: August 19, 2010, 10:24:10 PM »
Where does one obtain small amounts of Nitromethane?  I live in an area without hobby shops and fuel will have to be mail order.  Being able to juice it up a bit as needed would be a plus.

Are there any drag racers or speed shops around?  You can get it from there.

Or, if your fuel supplier will cooperate get a case with three gallons of fuel that's as mild as you'll ever go, and one gallon of something really 'hot'.  Get them with the same oil content, and mix in as much of the hot fuel as you need to get the nitro content you need that day.  That way you're not diluting your oil content with the nitro.  And, you'll always have something for the 1/2A planes!

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Tim's answer is the only way I know of too for Nitro...Our local Speedshop keeps
it in 55 gl. drums...don't plan to store it for extended time...it evaporates fairly
quickly.

Dick: Go with what Tim said. If you're going to be ordering
fuel, buy several different mixtures; such as 1 gal. FAI,
some 5% and 10% and then a gallon of say 25% and just
mix up what you need. This is what I do with my Thunder
Tiger in my Classic plane. I mix FAI with the appropriate
5, 10, 15, whatever % to get my optimal mixture.

No need to be too picky about what you buy. The care comes in prefiguring how much of what to put with how much of what. With a calculation "system", you can make pretty much any % or combo of % of anything with commercial fuels + readily available oils of your choice. Several folks have different, but equivalent, methods and formulae listed in the "Engine Tips" section. Can'r remember the exact name of the thread, but you'll find it.
