Brodak releases the FJ-4-15 Fury kit
« on: April 07, 2014, 07:00:29 AM »
Although the airplane was designed for carrier it also makes for a cool semi-scale sport airplane that's fun to fly and looks really cool in the air. If built for fun/sport leave all the embedded carrier hardware off and build it as light as possible. An FP-15 is the perfect engine if you build it for sport.

The back story....
Some time ago I renewed my interest in Navy Carrier but wanted to build an airplane that I actually worked with when I was in the Navy. To make a long story short I decided on the FJ-4 Fury. I kinda got carried away with the original and added all kinds of monkey motion gadgets and details. It was a 35 size profile that was really more standoff scale than a competitive carrier airplane.

Even though the first version was too big to really be competitive, it proved the concept that a swept wing airplane would work and could be made competitive. At the time my understanding was that 15 carrier is suppose to be an entry level event so back to the drawing board to design a 15 sized version of the FJ-4. Between myself and other club members, four were built from the original plans and two went to Brodaks in 2012 to compete in 15 carrier. I ended up not flying due to a prop and fingers incident but Joe Gilbert placed 1st with the FJ-4 in 15 carrier.

To make another long story short, John Brodak decided to kit the 15 size Furry and I just received an example out of the first kit run. I posted my first thoughts on the kit and a couple photos in the Carrier section.

This is the build thread on the first version, the big one.. The 15 uses most of the same building techniques except it has a built up wing.

And a photo that shows just how big the first one was.

The large one looks very cool! How does it sport fly?
I always wanted to build the profile F9F Panther that was in Model Aviation years ago--designed by a famous artist. But your experience says that a Cougar should be possible, too.
Thanks for showing what you have done!

PS--Do you always fly with famous guys like Hulk Hogan?

Lee will get a kick out of the Hulk Hogan reference, am sure he will see this thread.

Never flew the big one without 3 line control, it has flaps but they only move one way. If built for stunt it should fly pretty good. We put an FP-15 on one of the small ones with standard two line bellcrank and it was a kick to fly. The only real drawback to swept wings is getting the CG in the right place and the only way to do that is with tail weight. With the CG right they fly just as well as a straight wing with the same numbers.

So true about swept wings.  Look at my King Sweep,  except my King Sweep needs more nose weight.   Finally got it through a full pattern last Sunday even thought it wasn't very pretty.    Going to have to get rid of some stuff if I get the .15 kit.
