The new Ephesian twin boomer is done!
« on: March 04, 2008, 11:21:31 AM »
Hey All,
I finally finished a new stunt ship before flying season arrived!  I don't know whether that will prove to be good or bad, but at least I can start trimming as soon as the snow melts and the flood recedes.
That will be a brand new concept for me as I always seem to still be doing the finish at the end of May.
The beast finishes off at 756 squares gross, with a wing loading of just under 8 oz/sq ft.  My lightest wing loading yet.  #^ #^ #^ #^ #^ #^ #^
Power is my new PA75 with my own pipe.  (It's a Randy clone with straight out exhaust.)  I'm including a shot of the under side to show two things, the two cooling scoops I decided to use and the carbon fiber wing mount LG.  I also plan to make a set of main gears out of 1/8" music wire for standbys.
This has been a really fun project, and is just a tad bigger than the original that I built in '95.  The wing is by the Control Line Guy - Crist Rigotti.  simply one of the very best!  Thanks Crist. #^ #^ #^
Blessings,
Will

Will,

Well, no one at the field will have a plane that looks like yours. That's certain. I rather like it. Very slick having the twin booms and the pipe tunnle set up. I really like that.

I built an overweight beast a couple of years ago that sported a carbon fiber main gear in a wing mount configuration. All I can say is  I hope it's got a little springiness or you will get a surprise on the first hard landing you do.

Very slick, though. I sure like it.

Thanks guys!
Errrrrr, uh, Robert, weeeeeeeeeeeellll, er uh, I punched something in wrong.  I got to thinking about the original verses this one as far as weight, then got to thinking about the area comparison and told me, "Hey, that can't be right, go do that over again."  I did and it ain't!  I don't know what I did on the calculator before but the actual loading is 13 oz/sg ft!  5.25 X13=68+  Now, that's also without the wingtip weight in place, so the actual is gonna come out around 13.5 or so.  I've flown some 13's and 14's with success, we'll see how this monster does.

Randy,
On the gear, I started with a nice finish using woven CF cloth with tow as the core and was sooooo proud of it.  Then I tried to flex it.  Nuthin' doin'!  I ground those rascals down to an amazingly thin profile before getting the beast to flex properly.  Then I got to evaluating my design and realized that A)The angle is much closer to verticle than my standard gears, and B) the legs are much shorter than my standard gears.
Hence the lack of material needed/allowed for the proper shock absorbancy.  I'm pretty pleased with them now, wouldn't have been on that hard landing you mentioned.  Can you say humps on the top of the wing?
wait a minute!  Hard landings?  Who ever makes hard landings?  (Besides me, that is.)

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!

Despite your math error ( b1) I think the weight wing area and power will all work well together.

We will ALL be waiting for the flight report AND am looking forward to seeing this one up close and personal!

Will,

I did the same thing you did on the plane I was flying was closer to 16.5oz/foot wing loading. As I said, it was a pig. The gear was too stiff and the first couple of flights on pavement, it bounced on landing. So I milled slots in the body and managed to get it to spring some. Enough that it didn't bounce every time I landed and I was pretty happy ... until I had a hard landing trying to get the toad down in the wind. It hit hard and suddenly it was sitting on the ground. The gear (regular wing mounted main gear) punched right through the wing. The gear was unhurt, but the wing was a total. Yikes. I suppose I should have put in a bit more cant and not made them quite so, uh, beefy.

I like yours thought and they should be fine. Cool plane. You should score well in the Wow points. Can't hurt.

Will,
Nice looking airplane.  Thank you for the kind words.  In reality, I supply the foam, but it was you who turned into a wing.  Good luck with it!

Prop clearance?  I don't need no stinkin' prop clearance - I got Mikeys' strong right arm!
Thanks for the compliment Mike, but seriously, I made sure this thing will leave from the grass just fine.  I guess we'll cordone off our own grass circle again on Monday at the nats?  I promise you won't need to hand launch for me again.
Blessings,
Will
