My Shop Is Finally Finished!
« on: September 02, 2011, 03:28:32 PM »
Well, after 3 years, it is completed.  I built it in the worst part of the basement that had a dirt wall and water problems.  It was quite a challenge to block up the wall, but the guy I hire for stuff like that is very good.  I pulled the insulation out of the ceiling and replaced with acoustic tile.  Insulation isn't needed if the basement is heated.  I ran all new wiring and have GFI outlets every few feet on two walls.  A new 4 bulb overhead fixture gives plenty of light.  The ceiling fan was there, so I worked around it.  I put 3 coats of light yellow paint on the cement and block walls.  I left the new wooden wall natural.

I built a bench to hold all my small power tools.  Unfortunately, the 8X11 room can't accommodate my lathe, so I had to leave that on the other side of the basement.  The building bench is a great value from Harbor Freight.  It was on sale and I had a coupon for 20% off.  I picked it up at the store for about $120.  You can't build it for that.

I have already stocked it with all my kits, engines and modeling stuff.  Now, I have no excuses.

Hello Dick    Thanks for the info about Mc Master-Carr I'll be placing an order as soon as I determine whatever else I can't live without.  I thought of you last week when the ambulance  passed routing info on, I 91 South ,for Charlestown. I was headed to Boston; the result of a routine stress test run amok. Consequently I have been internetless since monday before last. I think it would be a great idea if who ever's in New England could get together. Maybe not even to fly ,just meet and commune. You can call me [or anybody else can, for that matter]
at 802 467 3934. I'll be here 24/7 for the next 2 months.      Thanks again   Bruce Grosser

I just know if that basement were mine, I'd stick a wing into that ceiling fan while manipulating my plane around...probably multiple times.

Funny you should mention that.  Tonight, when I opened the door, I heard and felt the fan hitting the top of the door.  It shouldn't have because it has clearance...at least, it did have.  One of the blades had de-laminated and the lower section had drooped down far enough to clip the door.  It was an old fan that was there during many days of wet basement.  It smelled kind of funky, too.

My first project will to be make new blades.  I have scrap plywood left over from the new wood wall.  Then, I can use the new saws and sander...then the shop-vac to suck up that nasty sawdust!

Very nice shop Dick. My shop is spread between a back bedroom and one end of the basement. I have acquired a few power tools over the last few years, a bench grinder, drill press, and a band saw. Every time I go to use them I remember the days of using razor blades for cutting balsa, and a coping saw for plywood. It just took a little longer. Way back when, I use to use one of those egg beater hand drills with flattened nails for drill bits. My first power tool many years ago was a hand drill and a set of real drill bits. But I did manage to scratch build many planes with those early hand tools.
