My P-47

Well it may not be as nice or as big as Bill's or Sparky'y but it's my first scratch built and only the second plane I've built in 30 years.From Charles Parrott plans wih a Magnum .36 for power. I molded the fuselage and sheeted the wings then covered tyhe whole plane with .5 ounce glass cloth. The first few flights were interesting, the engine seemed fine on the ground but once in the air it would get rich. On 60 ft. lines I had lap times of almost 6 seconds(way to slow). Later investagation showed the the problem was with the gas tank. It has since been swapped out but as of yet I have not had a chance to take it to the fields to fly. A special thanks to Mike Schmitt for the pics and for doing the first test flights for me! I was recovering from a broken wrist and Mike was gracious enough to fly somebody elses plane that had never been flown.

Plane looks great.   Will not comment on the fellow holding the plane as I don't beleive we have met.  You know this CRS affliction I have.  Anyway hope you have many great missions with it.  DOC Holliday

Hi Don,

Beautiful job!  As  I said elsewhere, I realy like mine.  The MAGNUM 36 should be a definite power boost over my McCoy RH 40, which will only make it better.

Good Luck with yours!

Hi Richard;

It weighs a little under 50 ounces. The originale Charles Parrott weighed I think around 42-44. The changes I made by sheeting the wings,stab,rudder,stabilizer and elevator along with using glass cloth brought up the weight quit a bit. I was hoping to come close to the originale weight by molding the fuselage instead of carving it. I think that I got a bad can of silver dope because when I opened the second can it had much more pigment in it. That first can took alot of coats to get good coverage. If I had opened the second can first I'm sure that I could have cut down the amount of dope I used thus cutting the weight some. My intent was not to build light but to build something nice looking and fly decent. I love to build but I'm not much of a pilot, at least not yet. Like I had said, this plane was a test bed for doing some things that I had never done before in regards to building techniques.I found out some intresting things and some techniques that I like very much along with building a plane that since childhood have always loved. I'm sure it will be a decent flyer and that is a bonus for me.
