Okay guys and gals, time to show off the new shop. I am sooooo blessed, can't believe this has happened.
This is basically my guitar shop, but you'll see that airplanes run a close second for room! My building board is a honeycomb unit that I can move from bench to bench should it be necessary, and it stays true. So, the bench you see on wheels will be the building bench for both instruments and stunters.
Here goes - first one is facing the back left corner of the 30 X 40 shop. (Heated 24/7)
-
Facing the left rear corner.
-
straight down the middle.
-
The back left corner is my 10 X 10 dedicated spray booth! I am so happy to finally have a good place to spray with an exhaust fan in the outer wall.
Note the white sheet hanging on the outside - it covers my current stable of flyable stunt ships. I don't want the dust to settle on those. That whole corner is airplanes and the lockers holding my parts, etc.
-
The air compressor room to hopefully curtail the noise of that monster unit! (There's also a porta-potty in there. VD~
My drafting bench is equipped with a drafting instrument that helps me tons. I'm too cheap to buy a good cad program. Spent it all on the shop! D>K
-
The main work area with messy tool boxes. That's the next project; cleaning those up.
-
The mind settling corner where I can find every one of my power tools and where all the small guitar parts are organized. What a blessing. %^@
-
And lastly, an overview of the main work area with seperate benches for each major task; fretting, electronics, inlay work, repairs; you know, all the good stuff.
My apologies if this has become boring, but I've been asked by so many close buddies that I went stupidly whole hog. Z@@ZZZ

Awesome shop... 1 day.......1 day

Wow Will great shop a far cry from ye ole basement,i was last in.
Ron
-
Thanks guys. Yes Ron, it's hard to believe how much faster projects go here than they did down in that tiny shop!!
-
Honeycomb unit? You got any photos of that?
-
Very awesome shop! I love it.
-
Fantastic. I'm jealous..
-

Not sure what you're referring to. If I have it, I'll gladly photograph it. R%%%%
-
UUUhhh when are you going to straighten that up and have an organized shop?? #^ #^ #^ #^
-
Well deserved Will. Continued blessings my friend.

In the first post your building board is a honeycomb unit
-
Oh yeah, duuhhh on me! n~ Wasn't thinking. I'll get a picture of that yet today. I built the thing in the early '90's and it has served me very well. It's on the third (I think) covering right now, which is blue foam and holding up very well. I believe that's the route I'll hold to from now on.
-
Beeyewteeful Will!! I'm sitting in my basement/shop trying to figure out the configuration that will best serve the organization and efficiency of accumulated hobby paraphernalia. I'm new to basements, having just retired and moved from Dallas to Michigan, and I lost 1 1/2 foot of ceiling space, but have more floor space now.
It is inspiring to see a guitar stand in the shop!
Blessings,
Steve

Will, I'm so jealous. That is one gorgeous work place. H^^
-
Okay, here's my building board. Maybe "honey comb was the wrong term, egg crate would have been better suited. But, I can cart it all over without the hassle of it losing integrity. First picture is the board as it will be for building, layng flat in otherwords.
-
Now the back, or egg crate structure.
-
Thanks everyone, for the kind comments. Wish I could have you all over for coffee and cookies!
Steve, where in Michigan? We might get together if you're close enough!
Doc, come by and we'll build together.
Mike, I might take the time to clean it up in a month or two, but right now I'm way too lazy! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~
As to turning into Tom Morris, I would love to have that many guitar customers! I actually have two students starting soon, and I'm excited about that. If it wasn't for the guitar shop, I could never have gotten this.
Crist, thanks pard, tight lines down thar in cowboy land.
-
;D ;D It must be nice to be "wealthy"!! ;D ;D
-
I like! And it's a tax write-off... y1 Steve
-
Very inspiring. I got a new shop myself just before Christmas. It remains empty. So far my only progress has been to remove a deceased mouse.
-
Was that the result of it running into a certain good lookin' orange cat named Spencer?
-

Alas, Spencer is gone. Both he and the mouse died of natural causes.
I went out to the shop today and swept the floor.
I don't know if my shop is as big as yours, but the ceiling is higher. I always wanted a shop with a high ceiling so I wouldn't clunk the wingtip against it when I turned a plane over, but 16 feet is excessive. Anybody have advice on how to access a high ceiling for stuff like wiring and fluorescent tube changing?
-
I've seen shops with high ceilings that had a partial second floor built with steps up to it.
-
This one has a second floor with a whole lot of steps up to it.
-
That is VERY nice !!!
-
absolutely stunning!
do you need a slave builder? i can live there lol
congratulations!
-
Howard, so sorry to learn of Spencer's demise - I also lost my orange furry buddy last August to natural cuases.
On the ceiling, would it be too much hassle to put in a drop ceiling at 10 or 10.5 feet? Mine is at 10.5 and works okay for that and I can reach it off a 6 foot step ladder.
Fred - I don't believe in slavery, but if you want to pitch a tent in this cold northern Ohio climate and help build guitars, come right on up! y1 (Bring lots of balsa with you, though.) ;D

we have a deal! any room for 4500 records?
keep us posted with the working done there now! regards from Brazil

Judging from the Hinton shop, it looks like I am seriously short of high zoot power tools. Making a long list of wood working tools to populate my work area.

Will
30 by 40 is very very cool and I like how you used the space..I am going to rip off some of your ideas
I have 16 x 24 2 story barn that is my model and hanger shop...insulated, heated, and Cooled with every creature comfort like beer, stereo, computers, great lighting, recliners...grin
14 x 28...off site built lofted barn double floored...for true wood working and the much larger WW tools
30 x 40 divided 20 x 30 and 20 x 30
This Original Drill stem Built and tin covered , on site built , steel building ----has been morphed into a finished half with full AC and electrics for my Wife's Quilting and hobby industry...the other half is schedule to be finished this season
...using more of our kids inheritance ...grin
One 10 x 12 Off site built storage shed
One 10 x 14 ----another off site Built storage shed ----abandoned and gifted to me...
all are on site and each a purpose
Add to this a 22 x 30 "Carolina" car port
and a "Carolina" 15' x 41' x 16' tall RV port
all--- and I do mean all of these are over cement slabs.....Trust me guys the building are the cheap items...
Don't be phreaking out... Wife and I do/did most all the Labor and this is all accumulated over 23 years of TAMING this 2.5 acres of hellish sucky Texas ROCK.... Well--- It is actually Ocean bottom called Colichie....look it up

"Anybody have advice on how to access a high ceiling for stuff like wiring and fluorescent tube changing?"
Since it is completely empty, consider renting a scissor lift. Will give you a safe platform with hand rails that is easy to move about.
Beautiful shops are an inspiration. I have made the progression from graveled carport to a garage with 6'-2" ceiling and 3" cracks in floor to a bigger but non-insulated garage with cumbersome doors. The dream is to have one insulated with grounded outlets!
-
Wow Floyd, that is gonna be gorgeous once it's done!! I love the floor and it looks to me as though you are well on your way to nirvana. The power tools have been accumulated over several years and only as needed for the side business. I don't use many of them for stunt ship building! LL~
Fred, wow, (again) sounds to me like you and the wife have the makings of a place that will set you up where you don't even need the house! Way to go. (Haven't cement prices gone out of sight!?)
-
Hinton./ You mentioned that you build guitars. I have dabbled in stuff like violin bows, and here is a Russian Balalaika (6-stringed) that I built from plans. (I don't know how to play it very well, since I am a violinist and this is not quite the same).

Those are neat! I wonder if it's tuned like a guitar? E, B,G,D,A,E from tenor side to bass side.
-
Tuning is strange. Top to bottom: A1, E1, E1
Two lower strings are in unison, making it hard to sort out.
Mine is "one of a kind" having 6 strings instead of the usual 3. Adjacent strings in unison (similar to a 12-string guitar) That makes it even more difficult to play.
-
That sounds like a first cousin to a mandolin. Interesting.

Will,
Very nice! I am jealous!
did you make the wheel adapters for the bench or buy them? If bought, where? I have one of the HF benches :-)

Some Guys just have all the luck!!!
Deservedly so I'm sure. Sorry but I can't help but be a bit jealous! Certainly is and enviable Shop in both size and functionality!
Mine is 10 X 20 and gets very crowded at times! In fact all the time!
All the best to you Will!

I made the wheel adaptors several years ago for a different bench, it met it's demise coming up out of my old basement shop so I saved the wheels only.
I had to cut my HF bench legs down smaller to fit the sleeves over them. I took a quarter inch of of two sides in order to force them in place. The legs are definitely strong enough for that, and I really like the moveability of this one. It will be my "rough" assembly bench for both instruments and AIRPLANES!
Something you might like also that I did to the bench, and plan to do with my other two HF benches, I found some full extension drawer slides on ebay and fitted them to the drawers on this. There was a deal with 10 sets for 40 bucks, a real steal. The only hitch was I had to replace the side supports with 1/4 inch ply to make the space wide enough. It was worth it!!
THANKS Randy! A lot of blessings have come my way, far more than I deserve.

Thanks Will,
Will plan to make the sleeve adapters to fit existing leg dimensions.
It will be a rough use, general assy bench. Major assy is done on a leveled, glass top "old type" drafting table.

Floyd, you don't want to use a bow on this instrument. Pizzicato is your best bet.
Hope this helps.

That's an idea. There's stuff up there, though: garage doors at one end and a gas heater at the other.

Thanks for the tip. I considered a scaffold on wheels, but that would take up space all the time.

Planes get a lot of pull here here but, the shop is where they ALL GET BUILT. Great, great shop. Starting to get my shop together. Will be studying your pics. Your shop is duel purpose; for planes and guitars. Mine will also be duel purpose, for planes and bike fabrication. If you have any shop tips, please pass it along. Thanks sooo much for posting.
-
You're welcome Milton, the main thing I recommend is that inclosed paint booth with a good exhaust fan.
Ty, hadn't even thought of that, gotta think that one over a bit. Thanks for the input.
Howard, one thing I was rather extravagent on was my lighting, I put up four tube LED fixtures. My electric bill has not increased over a couple of bucks and I can see wonderfully in there! No shadows anywhere.

You need one of the step ladders we used to have in telephone central offices. 12 foot to the top rail and had wheels, also could be folded together to take less space. I know when I built my shop I was wishing I could have confiscated a couple of them.
