MY DEAR BROTHA...LEO "MAIL!"
Thanks GOOD BUD... for giving me that telephone call the other day!!!
GADS! U LIFTED MY SPIRITS...
great fun talkin bout the good ol' krazzzeeee daze days...and the good new friends and old friends that you met while at VSC.
Here is a scan of Parker and Joe Dill...that I took the morning Tim, Vance and I awoke (NOT REALLY) to the sounds of that K&B45...just outside the NAVY DORM ROOMS at the Olatha nats.
I remember how SHOCKED Tim and Vance were that morning to see these two grunts that just days before both proclaimed that they were not going to attend the 68 nats.
The reason for our SHOCK was that Tim, Vance and I had just driven about what seemed about a MILLION MILES THROUGH HOT HOT HOT SUMMER TIME HELL ON EARTH...FOR 3 DAYS....and then after a sleepless in Olatha Kansas night...all of us were tired and beat to hell in a handbasket...ONLY TO BE AROUSED
by the sound of that damned unmuffled K&B 45 of Joe Dill and Parker, (his piteeefull pit crew) that was practicing out on the still hot from the day before tarmac..... just a few meters from that 100+ degree dorm room filled with the sound of stinky dirty snoring stunt grunt bodies.
Tim Dunlop, Vance, Ted Fancher and a bunch of us...gathered our stunt models out of the trucks of our cars...walked over to the sound of that engine. I can only imagine just how gameee' all of us looked that next morn. Hardly anyone used the showers in the morning. Everyone wanted to get a few practice round in before the qualification rounds that were due to start around 10:30 am or so??
....Here is the scene that was were to behold captured on slide film...
Both Bob Parker and Joe Dill...FLEW NONSTOP TO KANSAS CITY..STAYED IN A FINE AIR CONDITIONED MOTEL...RENTED AN AIR CONDITIONED CAR...AND ARRIVED LOOKING FRESH AS DINGEEEDAZIES---FULLY RELAXED AND RESTED!
In those days....I never went anywhere without either my Minox or my old Minolta SR-2 with Kodachrome 10.
All Tim and I could do...is wait our turn to test fly and to say:
"HEY PARKER AND DILLY! SMILE!! U ARE ON SHULTZIES CANDID CAMERA!!! VD~
