Nice choice! Is it from fresh scratch, or revised from a Brodak kit "United" kit?

It started as a United rib set from Brodak since I seem to kill an entire forest of balsa trees trying to make a set of ribs and a set of Sabre plans from Flying Models

No monokote for me only silkspan and dope If I used monokote when Larry Fernandez makes his traditional attack on my new planes with an Exacto knife he may not stop cutting

Nice work Brian! Really smart to use a more modern airfoil. The original, Bob's, flew so killer it wasn't funny. First plane I ever saw do a full pattern,("so thats what it looks like").

umm..... what "modern airfoil" are you refering to? I hope Brian didn't change it from the original Sabre/United airfoil. That would make it non Classic legal.

Or do you just mean modern as in "not OT era"?

Hi Clint,

According to Bobby Champione, his United (original) and his Sabre (original) have the same ribs........ so you should be fine.

We went over all of that when he spent the week with me a couple years ago.

Yes Bill, I'm aware that the Sabre and United airfoil are the same. I was concerned that Brian changed it to a different or "modern" airfoil by Proparc's comment. But, Brian probably didn't change a thing.

I didnt change anything other than a couple of minor things that wouldnt matter the plane is essentially the same as the drawings same airfoil as the original I dont think I have the ability to change anything that would make it fly better than the original

Sorry, I wasn't *talking down*. There was some *questions* about the airfoils, etc., from some people, so I was just putting ut there what the Champ, his own self, said.

I have a wing built from Bobby's Lost Foam cradle, that he left here for me, so I hope to get it done before too long. Going to power it with a ST 46/28 small case that Randy set up. Champione said his flew awesome with the Biog Jim Hemi ST 46 so I will kinda follow suit. I will do the '69 Paint scheme, it was a touch simpler than the last scheme he used!

I know, and I didn't take it that way. The Sabre with the '69 paint scheme is on my "to be built" list too.

My reference to "a more modern airfoil" was that I thought you were using the current United wing, which I believe is Patternmaster based. Yes, the United and the Sabre share the same foil, I remember. But to this day, I still think the Sabre flew much better than the United,(the OS Max 35 version). I saw them both fly.

Specifically, to my eyes,(they were very young then LOL) the Sabre seemed to track much better,(like it was on rails) and came out of corners much harder and flatter. This last characteristic was the most noticeable difference and gave the plane a spectacular, almost unbeatable appearance through the pattern.

Needless to say, only Bob can really tell us just what was up back in 69,(has it really been that long) between the two ships but, if I am not mistaken, the Sabre racked up 11 straight wins prior to it's win at the 1969 Nats at the hands of a certain "Mr. Champione".

Hey Brian,

Very nice workmanship and yes the Sabre and United were identical except for the canopy, rudder and extra wheel. The Sabre did track incredibly well and so did the rebuild I took to the 2004 NATS, unfortunately that ship met its demise at Brodaks. I put in higher landing gear cause I was nicking props but didn't think of the arm of the gear that apparently went up passed the LG block. The leadout was rubbing against the the steel vertical part of the gear arm and just let go during a practice flight.
'I did like the last paint job I used which is more like the moden F100 the Thunderbirds fly now with the bird on the bottom. Oh yes and the extra power of the Big Jim ST46 was definitely a very BIG plus.
You're workmanship by the way is pretty awesome. Very, very nice woodworrk. send me some pictures as you go along I'd love to see them. By the way PROPARC was correct, that original Sabre won about 11 first places right up to and including the NATS. Of course I was also just 27 years old at the time and literally flew every day. Have a birthday coming up on Sunday the 7th and I'll be 68 years young.
I Iove this Hobby and all the people I've met along the way have just brought nothing but alot of friends and joy and laughs to me. I just hope I did the same for them.
Well enough ranting for now, gonna jump on my threadmill and do a few miles, got to keep that old heart in good shape.
