I will try this again. Attached is my first attempt at building an I Beamer. A Cobra kit by Walter Umland. Slow going, but I am making a solid try at it.

Wow that looks great!!
You can't go wrong with one of Walters kits!

Thank you Paul!

Don't you just love Walters kits? Pretty much just falls together. Add glue and paint, place in front row! Yes!

Beautiful stuff. I have always loves that form of construction and will try it eventually. Thanks for the pics. H^^

Pat Nice Job
Leave out a couple of ribs where the gear mounts and put them in after gear is mounted. Also shorten the false ribs as they gets to the tip. It will save weight. This long gone Ibeam has the false ribs cut to match the spar.

Looking good Pat #^ #^

I-Beamers can be habit forming. That looks great. Ed beat me to the punch on the shortening of the riblets.

Wow check out the size of the work bench, how'd you get that sheet of glass home.

This is a Collossus also building from a Walter kit. Great kit. Wanted to finish it for VSC but looks unlikely now due to some health problems.
Anyway it shows removable gear in an I-Beam wing that I believe to be a very useful mod.
Also shows the shortened riblets that have been mentioned before. I prefer to do all the hacking carving and drilling necessary on the fuselage (engine mounts etc) prior to building the wing onto it.

I see walter has outdone hisself again and the quality of work you are putting into it. I just have too many kits. HB~>

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Sadly I didn't check in with this thread before I got all ribs in place, so the half ribs didn't get tappered, and I had to figure out the gear part on my own.... Don't ask me about that. GRRRRRRR!!! Any way I got it figured out. I will post more pics later.

Hi Pat,
You know my phone number. ;D Any help you need, just call. Nothing has been done so far that isn't fixable. That's the great thing about balsa wood models! If you need the Werwage tape again, just come get it.

Pat Like Randy said I would not mount the landing gear to the spar. I make all mine removable. Just use the old slotted hardwood method and mount it to the spar. It is a lot easier to build the wheel pants with the gear off the plane. Also add a piece of plywood at the trailing edge center. I have built so many of these I frame them up in a afternoon. Just call me if you need help. Use a straight edge and mark the false ribs and cut them off with a sharp razor blade.

Randy, I have that kit too. Planning to us a RO-Jett also.

It's and excellent kit. Maybe the best I've built. You'll like it...get started. The RO Jett shown is a 61...good choice I think.
I think the removable landing gear kit from Walter is worth the small price if he still has any. It mostly saves bending the wire. The wires were bent perfectly...no kidding. I always have a little trouble getting both exactly the same. These look like they were stamped in a die...they weren't of course but they were very well done.
Mine is a lot further along now than shown in the pictures but I haven't taken the camera out to the shop in a while. Picked up a Stinkin' cold somewhere and haven't done much for a while. Also like most places this year it's been very cold here!
