My facebook account
« on: April 09, 2020, 04:53:21 PM »
For what it's worth, I have received numerous messages from friends and acquaintances that my facebook account has been "hacked".

I have no idea what this means or what it entails but I have not accessed facebook in any way whatsoever for at least the last eight years.

Furthermore, I do not plan to--- EVER.  I do not even know what password I used.

So, should facebook messages appear with my name associated, rest assured that I have absolutely no contact with that organization and the messages are NOT from me.

Ha ...now makes sense...I been ignoring you this week. Last week you sent friend request, I accepted then we messaged back n forth a bit but your answers did not make sense..I asked you to call...nothing...Today I go to block you and see that you were born 1996....too funny--- not quite sure what angle your hacker was selling but glad I did not click the link

Bob,
I received a few messages from facebook over the last week or so stating,"We have changd your password per your request".
Obviously fishing for a reply, I did not reply.
I never had, and never intend to have , a Face Book account.
Take care, stay safe.

Sounds like you need to access your FB account for the sole purpose of terminating it.  Do not make it inactive (they will offer that), wipe it out.

Using facebook all the time, I can take a guess as to what happened.

This hack is extremely simple.  They create a second account with the same name.  A pseudo.  Then they grab a pic for the profile, any contacts you might have, etc.  And, since this website asks for full name, they can now know who to ask for friends.  Based on the profile pic, this hacker is pretty good. Could be reading me, right now.

Looks like they may have actually cloned your actual account, creating a second account without ever logging in to the real one.  If enough folks report it, facebook will delete the clone.

I closed my account a few years back. facebook makes it feel like your dumping your best girl, but don’t fall for it. Just delete it.
They even force a cooling off period. Once you choose to delete the account they make it final in two weeks, giving you a chance to go crawling back.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

Simply get on your account and change your password. The messages will stop.

There are quite a few Control Line groups popping up on facebook and it's quite refreshing to see the interest. This is the arena that younger people live now, social media is huge and to help CL stay alive we need to use it.! My dad is 80 and still checks his facebook account for guys contacting him from being in the military together. Those connections would have been lost forever, never knowing where those folks are. My dad actually found a gentleman that he served with, very close close friends. My dad hadn't seen him in almost 50 years. Come to find out the guy lives 30 minutes away! All thanks to facebook.

Many young people especially folks just getting into CL simply search facebook, YouTube, And Twitter before going to the internet or a forum like this one to see content. Not a bad thing, just different. I love Stunthanger, great place to get info and meet some cool guys. But I'm 51. My two kids, 25 and 28 years old don't do "forums".

There is quite a bit of junk on facebook, couldn't agree more. But posting information, pictures of events, pictures of flying sites, groups of flyers will entice younger people to get involved. I know all that can be done here but our children are conditioned for the way in which they get their information. Social media (facebook) will get their attention faster, trust me.

Is there great information in the newspaper everyday? You bet! But no one gets their news in that format anymore.

My $.02

Thanks,
Deric

Deric,

Very interesting take, that facebook will draw in younger folks.  Makes sense and appreciate your sharing.

Regarding the benefit of changing his password, that will not help with the issue of a newly created clone account sending friend requests, which is what is noted above.

thanks again,

Peter

You know, the facebook group does have a different feel.  More Flite Streak / Ringmaster / Twister builds.  Most posts have pics.

Maybe this is why I get so many friend requests from other modelers that I have never had any prior contact with.

Some of the messages say my friend request has been accepted, but I never actually sent them a request. Many names I recognise. Paul Walker is one example, and I have little reason to believe he or some others even know who I am, unless they are people that watch my Stunthangar video hangouts show. But it seems they would mention that.

I guess when I signed up on the Combat facebook site that put me into facebook.  Been able to watch the videos of our pastor doing his sermon and Sunday school lesson.   Also was looking through the friends requests and finding relatives I have forgotten about.  A couple I used to baby sit many, many years ago.  But like any thing we have to careful of the empty headed nerds that thinks its fun to mess with peoples accounts. I couldn't shred more Peter...!!!

Those will be the folks that someday build more complex planes but today they be braving this World called Control Line Flying with a Ringmaster. Some are just happy with the level where they are but some will continue into all of the aspects of this wonderful hobby..!!!

What the Control Line World needs to do is embrace them, give them good grounded advice and cheer them on and encourage them when they crash a plane. Some of the folks on here may have forgotten where they started, it was hard to learn on our own but many on here had mentors that guided them, corrected their mistakes before it cost them a plane.

I'm just trying to encourage folks that facebook is a viable bridge between the veterans of this hobby and the new folks / younger builders. Don't give up on it because it has some problems which may include getting hacked.

Email was a new technology that many on here struggled with for a very long time. I remember when lasers were voodoo untill a few guys built a kit that had been laser cut. Electric power was what the kids wanted to play with but all top guys at the NATS fly it now.

The hobby is changing and we have to change with it. I don't it to die because we weren't brave enough to suck at something new.

I just wanted to expound a little on what Deric posted above about how facebook has brought many people into the Control Line world.  A few years ago, I created two facebook control line groups.  I don't know if Deric even knew this or not but I started CONTROL LINE FLYING and CONTROL LINE CLASSIFIEDS.  In the beginning there was just me and I sent invitations to a few of the guys I knew who flew CL and there was only a handful of us in the group and I was the sole administrator.  CONTROL LINE FLYING started to explode and I was getting busy doing other things so I turned the Admin jobs over to Dane Martin and Jamie Holford,  Since then, T.J has joined as an administrator.  Today that group has grown to over 3900 members and is still growing.  CONTROL LINE CLASSIFIEDS grew quickly too and now has 2000 members who regularly buy and sell on that site.

Forums like this one serve a great service to those of us who build and fly control line models and the archives are irreplaceable.  That is why I want to cry when I think what has evidently been lost on Stuka Stunt because the amount of information on that forum was also irreplaceable.

The facebook groups also offer a valuable resource for those who are more comfortable with a social media platform.  I am not going to be redundant to what Deric has already stated because he laid it out very well.  I too have been able to reconnect with people I had lost touch with and renewed a lot of old friendships.  Guys I served with in Alaska and Southeast Asia during Vietnam.

I understand the disdain that some on here have for social media and that is why we have different platforms to serve the same purpose.  I don't really care how the folks get into the hobby, to me it is just important and great that they do.

The Admins you chose do an excellent job of keeping all the distasteful and hateful political bull$hit off the group. It's exactly what it should be, a model airplane page.

I check Control Line Flying on F.B. everyday along with Stunthanger. It is a great group that Mike started. It's a little different, not as technical as S.H. Moderated well and a nice group of members.

Seems like I went through this crap with facebook just 2-3 weeks ago, and today I've been getting various messages about my FB account being hacked or cloned or whatever. The whole thing is a PITA and I hope the miscreants get all the bad karma they're entitled to! It's getting to be a full time job just stomping this crap out! Latest, I got a message from some guy named "Lyle" (N7118X at aol)….sorry if Lyle is a FB friend, but I can't recall a Lyle right now! Perhaps because I've already had an unpleasant day, before I turned on my cell phone and started getting text messages about my FB account.  I'm not mad about getting notified...thanks to y'all….but I'm bloody pissed that I can't leave my FB account unattended for a decade or more without some asswipe screwing with it.   ''

Lyle wanted to be replied to on Stunthanger, so here it is. IT WASN'T THE REAL ME!

Steve Holt called me up and suggested that I change my picture on my FB page to cross up the bad guys, so I did that. I posted the picture with my wheelbarrow project, previously posted on SH. Ciao, Steve
