My Brodaks Adventure...
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:40:28 AM »
This will mostly be pictures of planes.  There were some really nice ones at Brodaks and I shot pictures of a few of them...

My adventure started when I pulled out of my driveway and headed down the street to notice that my "battery" light came on in my Safari van.  I got to the parts store and had them check my alternator and battery - "battery is fine", "alternator is shot".  Oh-oh.  Turned around and headed for home.  My van stopped running about 3 blocks from home.

Okay, grab wife's Equinox, load as much as I can get into it and head out again.  Happily, got to Dick's with no more trouble and we loaded up his Suburban and headed out.

We got there Wednesday afternoon and did the usual visiting with everyone, bought stuff from Tom Morris, and taking our shopping lists over to Brodaks Hobbyshop.

Thursday was Old Time Stunt.  I saw this one in the pits.  Really beautiful!

Of course, looking closely you'll notice it is electric powered.  Sort of sacrilegious, I suppose, but really pretty just the same.  I suppose I could be offended by it, but if it were mine I'd fly it in Old Time anyway!

I had a Stuka Stunt like this years ago.  Very appealing airplane.  And eligible for Old-Time...

Joe Gilbert from Oklahoma.  Great guy, terrific flyer.  I only get to see most of these guys once a year at Brodaks, but count them as great friends...

Here is a picture for John Lindberg.  Looks a lot different than the profile version, doesn't it?

Here is a close-up of the canopy area.  Nicely done.  Also, notice the rivets?

The side of Tim's fuselage.  What can I say?  Just really well executed.  By the way, NVCL will be kicking off our fall building season with another Tim Stagg clinic, so stay tuned.

Thursday night Alan Buck invited us to a little get together that various ne'r do wells showed up at.  Pete Klepsik had built these (for his or someone's grandkids I think) and was showing them off.  I think that is Pete in the blue shirt with Dick and Ben on his right.  Banjock is in the red T-shirt, I think that's Murphy's back, also some Norfolk guys and a sampling of others standing around.  Just because official flying ends around 3 or 4 doesn't mean that all activities stop.

Frank Imbriaco with his Caprice.  Superb workmanship!  I caught up with him as he was leaving for the day and I just had to get a picture of his plane.  A Bob Hunt design that can be flown in classic, but is still competitive in PA.

So here is a picture of the guy who has more fun than anyone, anywhere.  Dan Banjock decided to fly an .010 powered Piper Cub in scale.  Maybe 10 foot long lines?  Dan also treated us to a flight of his Dyna-Jet powered stunt ship.  Completely over the top and wake-the-dead loud!  What more could you ask for?

Frankly, if you haven't seen Dan's Dyna-Jet stunter fly, well, it's akin to never seeing the Statue of Liberty or viewing the Grand Canyon.  What is great fun is if a newby walks up to see what is going on.  You should see their reaction when the Dyna-Jet fires up!

Another beautiful ship, the Junar.  There were great-looking planes all over the place.  Because Dick and I judged Intermediate on Friday and Saturday, we missed a lot of the flights up at the Advanced and Experts circles where this stuff was flying, but I took what pictures I could.

I actually enjoy judging.  The Intermediate flyers are fun to judge.  It is usually a mix of people who have been flying Intermediate a long time; guys who have flown a long time but never entered a contest before, but fly too good for Beginner; and up-and-coming flyers on their way from Beginner to Advanced.  We saw our share of rookie mistakes and the types of errors people make when they are on a steep learning curve, but that is what makes it fun!  The ones at the top will soon be in Advanced.

When we finally wrapped up Intermediate judging, I got to go over to the Expert circle to put my flight in for the day.  Elwyn Aud caught mine (in maybe an outside loop?) and posted it on StuntHanger.  Nice picture so I gotta share it.  Dick and I spent a bunch of time trimming it and fooling around with it on Wednesday and Thursday.  I also got lots of good advice from Joe Adamusko, another great builder and flyer.  I am getting more comfortable with it (20 flights now) but its 5.7 lap times are just too slow.  I'll be trying other props.

I was greatly honored to receive the Red Reinhardt Award from Dee Rice and Elwyn Aud at Brodaks.  I guess the award was made partly because it's pretty hard to mistake my Silver Lancer series for anything else in the sky (Hurray for guppy tails!)  But I think that the twin Merlins up front didn't hurt at all!

I am sorry for those of you who missed the Fly-In.  This is an event that sooner, rather than later, could be in our rear-view mirrors.  And now we've got to wait another year to see so many of these folks.  It is quite the yearly reunion.

Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to judge and give advice to us rookies. It was my first time there and it was a great time.

Hi Scott :

Thanks for posting the photo of my Caprice and your kind words about it.  There were so many equally beautiful aircraft present  and I wish there was more time to get to study them and converse with their owners.

Hi Scott,

You thought I was Dee Rice instead of De Hill. Don't feel bad, this is a common thing. Dee Rice is from Texas who designed the Oriental and runs the big Ringmaster contest down there. I'm the Oklahoma De who is a member of the Tulsa Gluedobbers.

I'm glad you liked the award!

Tom:

Thanks for the "thanks".  You'll be amazed at how many people you end up counting as friends even though you only see them that once a year at the Fly-In.

Frank:

I wish I could have gotten more pictures, but am very happy I shot your Caprice.  You do goood work!!

De (Hill):

Oh darn!  I'll claim my mis-identification was due to "fun fatigue".  Sorry!

The P-47 looks great. It looks like it's built using the Brodak P-40 wing, is it?
