When I attend contests and "shmooze" with others, they sometimes ask about my picture showing me playing the violin.  So, I have played since age 9.  I majored in violin at Univ. of So. Calif.  I have played in symphony orchestras for over 40 years.  Although my main income was in engineering, I have played professionally for several years.
Now at 79, I play only with friends, and for my own amusement.

Well Floyd,

Although I played all kinds of music, with a band put together just to make money, I was actually a Jazz drummer.

Had this thing for those "skins," so I traded in the drums for a banjo.

That's how I get people out of the house. I just start pickin.

Works better than the violin. 

Did you here about that guy that went out to dinner with his wife? The only place he could park his Mercedes was around the corner out of his view. Told his wife for sure someone would brake into his car.

Well, after dinner, as they approached the Mercedes, a broken rear window was obvious. "Oh my gosh!" He said to his wife, I can't imagine the damage.

They looked into the car and there was no damage. Just a banjo on the back seat.

Floyd, you have a talent that a lot of people wish they had.   Remember Jack Benny and his violin?   It took talent to make a comedy act out of it.   My son  played in grade school up thru junior high.   Then his music teacher lost his life and my son just gave up.  I tried playing a cornet,  but gave up after cold sores kept plaguing me.  I admire anybody that can make music.

While we're in Great Falls we always go see a man/woman twosome (The Rivertown Rounders) that play Old County & Blue Grass. The male, Richard Baker, plays banjo along with half a dozen other instruments. When Dave Letterman first came to Montana someone told him about a banjo player that looked like him. Richard does. Dave had Richard fly back to his show; told his audience that he "learned" to play while in MT. and left the stage to get his banjo. Then Richard came on stage dressed the same and began playing.

Richard is full of funny/corny one liners during his show. Here are a couple of his standard banjo jokes:

Know how to tell the difference between a dead skunk and a banjo on the road? Skid marks in front of the dead skunk.

Know the difference between a banjo and a Harley? You can tune the Harley.

I think it'd be funnier if the joke reads: "What's the difference between a banjo and a sandwich?"  Opinions will vary.

It would be fun to have Floyd come up to The Scobee and bring his fiddle. Rex will bring his trumpet, I'm sure. The concert will be at Scobee Field at 6pm sharp. The BBQ will start well before that, at Mike's.  Steve

Hi Floyd, let  me introduce you to Lindsey Sterling...you may have heard of her already. I've been watching her videos for over two years now and have watched in awe as to her talent...she is now on a world tour. Hope you can open and enjoy.

Will, c'mon, it's a video production! I would bet $ that the entire sound track was dubbed in later. Obviously, there is an orchestra backing her up, perhaps even more violins. Adorable and talented, no argument from me.  Steve

I hear what you're saying, Steve, but when I watch the Celtic Girls their violinist does some incredible dancing while playing, also.  I would like to know how the background props were done!

I played gigs with several banjo players over the years. Both 4 string tenors and 5 strings. I just love that sound. It is a happy sound that makes you feel good.

'glad you're still playing your violin. I'm still playing too, although I just this spring "retired" from the CPO, with whom I've played and been section leader for many years. I'm using this 4-week, 8-concert summer season of the Lakeside (OH) Symphony to decide how much to continue participating in my smaller orchestras (options including 'cold turkey' cessation) - having fun so far. I just read the first short chapter of Regina Brett's book, God never Blinks, where she notes that a survivor friend always tries to replace "have to" with "get too", and I marveled at how great it was to "get to" play  the "Academic Festival" overture, "Unfinished Symphony", "New World" Symphony, all on Tuesday night's concert,  when some of my compatriots were "tired" or looking for more varied repertoire. We're very fortunate to be able to do what we do and see a thousand or so out there every night enjoying it. 'think I'll take the fiddle out to Gusti's Mini Folk Music Festival Sunday night, after doing the club newsletter back in Cleveberg, and maybe we can do something together on her program. I don't think I'm really ready to hang it all up yet either!
