Musta got the last one
« on: September 13, 2009, 04:50:17 PM »
I was looking for a variable speed scroll saw and larger than the 16" Craftsman that I have. CPO sent me an email ( I've bought from them before) and browsing through I clicked on the Dremel tools and low and behold they had a fully factory reconditioned model 1830-RT variable speed 18" Dremel scroll saw for 159.99 They also had FREE shipping. It took 3 days to get it and is it ever sweet runnin. I checked back on there site and no longer see them. Bummer cause this one is nice.

 MORE GOOD INFORMATION !!!!
I also recently came by a new Dremel Scroll saw from an estate sale.  It was missing the Operator's manual, so I googled Dremel, Got their toll free number and called them to obtain a manual.  Not only did I find that the manual was available (but not on-line), it was FREE--- not even any shipping.
I got the manual, and decided to order a couple of their accessories and found that while they had discontinued the Scroll saw line in 1994, they still had full support of them and the prices were the same as was listed in the old manual they had sent me.   HEY--- I BOUGHT A LOT OF STUFF THEN !!!
Dremel Co is ALRIGHT in my book.

Does it show signs of use or wear?

I own one and have used it almost daily for 5 years and only have had to lube the moving joints. It is variable speed with a blower an l.e.d. light it cuts oak and maple easily and you dont even know you are sawing on balsa.

Dick, the one I have has a scratch or two but thats it. Works great and takes pin or flat blades. You can also turn the blade mounts to saw side to side, my smaller Craftsman didn't. I think they made these later than 1994, my manual has 11/06 on it and my saw sure isn't 15 years old.

All I know is what the lady said--- perhaps she meant the model that I have. but they do not show any scroll saws now in their product line.
Ah well-- at least they still support their products.

If anyones interested, I just was checking CPO's site and they have another one. Same price and free shipping.

I have Bob Furr's foam video, and was as impressed with his Dremel saw as much as the actual content. I'm thinking, "too bad these are no longer available"

They did have another, no shipping as you said. They didn't advertise "No Shipping Charge" anywhere that I saw, but the total debit was just the advertised price.

Thanks for the tip! Seems like a good place to know about!!  y1

Well Marvin, no matter what it's age like you said they still support and it looks pretty good for a saw.

Larry, glad it helped, if you look at the site home page in the upper right in Red it says free shipping on orders over $99.00 That's better than Tower and others.

Think I have the predecessor to this one, it's two speed and no light, has the air hose but find it gets in the way more than it helps keep chips off the cut line. I use my band saw much more than I use the scroll saw, seems straight and square cuts are more common than curvy. Really like the saw, too bad they have decided to quit making scroll saws.

I just ordered one.  I checked stock this afternoon, after reading this thread and the site confirmed availability.  Now, when I went back to place an order, I got a message in red that they weren't available.  I went ahead and placed the order anyway and it went through. Shortly after, I received an acknowledgment email.

Keeping my fingers crossed! #^

As far as the previous post comparing a scroll saw to a band saw, I tend to agree that not much scrolling is needed to bang out an airplane.  However, I considered the cost of saw blades, the ability to change one quickly, and the availability of different TPI with scroll saw blades.  Plus, you don't have to worry about breaking the weld on the blade.

I do see a band saw in my crystal ball, though, sometime in the future. y1

Small world! The reason yours became available is I screwed up in placing my order >:( !

Hah, figured it out this morning, (thanks to your note on the e-mail -- realized I never got an e-mail) and called CPO.

Sure enough, no record of my order by zip code or last name. However, even though none listed in the list, they did find another 1830 stuck back somewhere.  #^

Mine came yesterday.  Two day delivery.  It looks like new, save for a sticker saying it was refurbished by Dremel.  Heck of a tool for the money.  Still, I wonder why Dremel got out of the scroll saw market.

There must have been quite a few returns in order to be able to offer them like that.

I am also curious if motor failure was the reason.  I have read reports about different types of small hobby machines with variable speed motors experiencing failures.  The reason, from what I have read, is that the motor should be started at zero rpm and then the speed control rotated to give the desired speed.  Probably the reverse should be done in shutting down.

In retrospect, I had one of the old gray crackle finish Dremel scroll saws back in the late 60's/early 70's.  It had a power take-off, a buffing wheel, a grinding wheel and a live flexible shaft with a spindle nose that would accept a couple of collets for chucking burrs or sanding drums.  It had a lot of flex in the arm and you had to be careful or the cut would walk all over.  Still, for what I used it for, it was fine.  My son took it years ago and he still has it, running it as required.  But this new saw is 10 times the machine.  I am very pleased.  Hats off to the OP who put me on the trail.  I had planned on buying a $100 Ryobi from Home Depot, but this saw is much better.

Well, here we are in 2018.  The Reconditioned Dremel Scroll Saw I bought at the time of this thread is still sitting on my bench, having never been used.  It is a great saw and is very heavy and substantial.  However, it will walk unless you bolt it down to the bench.  I never did that because I hadn't used it.

At this point, I would consider selling it because I need the room and this great saw is sitting when some other modeler could keep it busy.

Let me know if there is an interest and I will put it up for sale in the proper location.

What are you asking for on price.  My Dremel saw ahs bit the dust finally after several over hauls.  Something is jammed in the motor.   Have lost count of how many projects this thing has cut.  I think it was the cutting of the 1/2A handles for Melvin that did it in. D>K

Dick....necro thread for sure

when I first came back I wanted a scroll saw...got a good one...and a Band saw... band saw gets all the use

Scroll saw is OK at a few things like inside cutting but seldom used

UNTIL I found Various grit and width sanding "blades" from OLSON

These turned my seldom used scroll saw into very useful tool for shaping(opening)  inside areas like wing or stab cutout or motor mounts

John, I think $100 plus shipping is a fair price since it is in like new condition and has never cut wood.  Like I said, I need the room on my bench because I just got a power feed for my milling machine and it will interfere with the saw.

Been buying stuff from CPO for the last several years now. Started with a Makita 18v 1/2" drill kit, then an 18v. Makita leaf blower (nice for blowing dust off the miter saw, table saw, bandsaw, etc., ok for leaves and gutters, too), followed by two 1/2" Bosch 110v. drill kits for the kids for Christmas last year, and now a Greenworks 110v. 18" chainsaw for myself. All were new, not refurbs. Good place, quick service, zero problems.   y1 Steve

Dan...Dane shows some of them... I got most from Amazon in various grits and widths... very useful

Technique is critical with the coarse grits .... the paper works in both directions up n down so as you feed the wood up against the grit you need to fold firmly down.... My Scroll saw is variable speed..... slow is a lot easier to control than very fast for the coarse grits but good n fast works well for the 150 to 320 grit stuff

So they will fit any scroll saw? I have a Dremel and a Craftsmen scroll saw with a variable speed adjustment. I wonder if Wally World has these on the hook in their stores?

Dan here in Texas I have never seen them in any of my usual tool drooling isles

Lowe's
Home depot
WallWorld
Ace

They work and are easy to install and remove on any saw with the PINNED blade holders.... My saw has both pinned and clamp adapters

I am also a big fan of the Olson brand saw blades...the factory blades that came with my saw were crap and I did not know it  (first scroll saw)  when I bought a variety of the much better OLson blades...the tool really came alive and started cutting straight and clean
