I got a treat at this years Team Trials. Warren Tihart brought to the Team trials a replica of Gene schaffer's legendary Stunt Machine.
Gene,Bob Lampione and Vick Macaluso were the star flyer's at My home field Flushing Meadows park. In 1971 as a 15 year old this model became the standard on how a model should perform. For those of you who saw Gene fly you know what i mean.
This model transported me back in time. Warren thanks for my back to the future moment. The model also sported the shock absorbing landing gear.
I will let the photos speak for them selves.

I agree with the planes and cars part but not so sure about motorcycles, Harley's were imposable to keep tuned the triple two strokes killed allot people I owned three triples, 250 , 400, 500 and I can tell you the Kawasaki triple 500 was a death machine, nope I think modern bikes are much better.

Another great looking plane by another great model builder/flyer. H^^

CL possibly, I can't think of any 70's domestic car I'd want to own expecially post 1974. Motorcycles, well Honda did introduce the CB750, 550 series back then and of course the legendary Kawasaki 900 Z1 and the smaller KZ650. Suzuki intro'd the GS1000 later in the decade. But hands down modern bikes are far better in 2011 than back then, most cars as well as what they may lack in brute HP is offset in Weight and handleing. I'm damn sure no one misses having to Jam match books into those poor excuse mobile entertainment 8 Track players.
I had a Suzuki 380 triple you could kick start by hand, The KZ650 which was a great machine. But both paled in comparison to my 1985 Kawasaki Ninja (Which I still have)
BTW, I was driving this in the 70's

Hi Jose,
Thanks for the pictures. I had heard (for quite a while now) that Warren was going to produce plans from Gene's original. Now to just get some plans! ;D

The cars too, consider how the new "muscle" cars out drag, out corner, out stop and just plain run smoother that the originals. And driven in an adult manner, get very good mpg.

I remember seeing Gene fly - CW as I recall (?). A truly amazing pilot.
What ever happened to him?

I was a big time motorcycle enthusiast in the 1970s and 1980s. Owning 11 different bikes in 3 years, sampling everything from Yamaha 100s (a twin cylinder 2 stroke that topped out at 55 miles an hour on rt 1 out of Philadelphia, PA, road it to North Jersey many times, my parent's home) to a Riverside 200 (a Benelli manufactured single cylinder street bike sold by Montgomery Ward) to a Honda 350 (excellently reliable) to 2 different BSA 650s (one was stolen, one blew up) until finally went to BMW 750s (a 1971 purchased in 1972, then a 1976, my final ultimate ride, stayed with me until the late 90s). My love was touring. Either solo or with Phyllis, who is now my wife and partner of many years. We toured to Maine, Nova Scotia, eventually making it to the West Coast. In 1973 or 74, I went from Philadelphia, PA to Lake Charles Louisiana, for the NATs. A nostalgic trip. A way to revisit a childhood pleasure. (I did not anticipate being the re-tread I am now, nearly ten years into this iteration). Am I that old. Yes. At Lake Charles, there were the heroes, the luminaries, I had read about but never seen in person. Bob Hunt, Al Rabe, Gene Shaffer, plus others. Gene Shaffer was one of the most memorable. In one flight his engine cut after two laps, much to my amazement, Gene continued to fly, loops, figure eights, one after the other. Wind flying. Thrilling.

Unfortunately Gene passsed away. It's on another thread on the forum in regards to the rights to this design. When are the plans going to be available from Warren? I have a copy of the FM plan, which Bob Hunt said were not accurate.

This is the plane I flew and was trimming for Warren at the Team Trials, It is a great airplane, Warren is a terrific craftsman, the plane is light stiff and straight, he has a really nice example of Gene's plane !
I look forward to seeing more of it next March

Jose,
I too am a big fan of the Stunt Machine. I saw it in a model magazine many years ago and that started something for me. Thanks for posting these photos.

That model does bring out good memories. Just as does seeing pink banshee's does. Being young and taking my models to the parks on my handlebars every saturday and sunday.

Jose,
Please post the specs or email them to me. Somebody out there must have some photos/documentation. Thanks.
