Some of you may remember some of these names, Jerry for sure. How about the other two? I vaguely remember, after all that was 42 years ago.
Jerry Solenum, Dan Bambrick and Jerry Phelps. Pictured with them are the mayor and park superintendent. You should know who's airplane this belongs to.
Our contest was big smoke back in those days.

That would be Jerry "Soloman" (I think)
I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance

Wasn't it "Don" Bambrick, not "Dan"? I just remember that from a construction article in FM. I wasn't there, and I never wore cool pants, except for one pair of rather conservative plaid bellbottoms.  y1 Steve

Steve, you might be right Don and not Dan, the writing on the back of my pictures are blurry from time. I met these guys but only knew Jerry Phelps. I can tell you one thing for sure, even thought names like Lewis McFarlend, Al Rabe and many other (today) well known names competed, there was no "haylo" effect that weekend. Their names did not empress me, I didn't know them.

That's the reason for the pants, Allen.  It's a way to get that big-name recognition without the big name.  Judges go crazy for a sharp dressed man.

Yes it was Don Bambrick. I believe he was the only person to earn 39 Appearance points at NATs on the 40 point scale (1966).

During NATS week we drove down by the site.   Must have been out in the boon docks back then.  Like Gage Park in Topeka KS.  Read and heard strories of guys riding the street car or bus to the park and try to emember to catch the last run before the sun went. down.   I was fortunate enough that Emmy and I got to go to a contest at the Oklahoma City OK flying site before it was shut down.   I wonder now if it is still there or has a shopping mall been put in.   Wichita's first site I got to go to was at the Beech Aircraft field.   FF, RC and CL on one field.   Almost got hit by an RC plane crash while rolling up rat racing lines one year.  So many circles disappearing because of lack of use.

Howard, if I thought pants like that would help my score I'd get the craziest looking ones and wear them all week long.
If I would have known you back then I would have come down to the combat circle and rooted for you. #^
Blessings
