I will make law and order prevail.
« on: August 03, 2016, 10:01:07 AM »
A personal note:   I have been dabbling in real world politics again and not working on CL much since The Brodak.

Since June I have been competing in a strongly contested election for Sheriff of Macomb County Michigan.   Yesterday I received 24,144 votes which made me my party's candidate in the November general election.

You can be assured that when elected my county will be safe for modeling.

My county is 19,000 +/- but only about 13,000 can legitimately vote

I have been here 22 years after Army retirement and always vote

Funny thing is---- almost all local bond issues or Commissioner/ Sheriff / Tax Lady.... what ever elected office or issue..is decided by a fairly constant 500~600 total votes where 350 +/- votes is the winner

I facetiously claim every few years (at the VFW) that I should run for Sheriff... I think I can afford to Buy 400 votes....grin

It's true! And here,http://www.freep.com/pages/interactives/freep/election-results/primary/2016/macomb/ you can find out which political party that would be. IF you have any doubt about who would claim to make law and order prevail. Now I gotta look up Macomb county and see where that is. Good luck in the next election, Paul. See if you can get some flying fields built adjacent to all the prisons and jails!   y1 Steve

I looked on Wikipedia -- it looks like Michigan has real counties.

I've lived in Oregon, where, at a guess, about 5% or less of the land is within some city limit or another and the rest is under the jurisdiction of the counties, and Massachusetts, where every square inch of land except for Quabbin Reservoir is within town boundaries and the counties are pretty much just lines on a map and the local gaolers.

Oregon makes more sense to me -- but then, this is where I grew up.

Paul,

What is your stand on the killer 17 year locusts?

Actually, our county employs the nations top dog catcher (animal control officer).  Those critters have NEVER attacked Macomb County.  They wouldn't dare.

Macomb County Michigan is not a small thing.  In population it is BIGGER than South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, or Wyoming.  When I see governors, senators, and US reps from those states on TV, I see people with smaller jobs than county officials in my county and a lot of other large counties.

My first post was intended to be a funny

I would never (at my age of 61) consider any of the County jobs. Way too many hours if done properly

I do wish you all the best if you do become sheriff

Here in our county the sheriff is crippled with brain dead deputies (my opinion) and way too many domestic family problems or drug issues with the citizens.... and do not get me yacking about the need for a much more expensive larger jail...we currently spend a bunch of $$$$ to house inmates in surrounding county jails....but the bond to build the proper sized and complaint jail is way too much and always gets voted down

no easy solutions and I do not for one minuet envy our sheriffs position

I would say have fun but there is no way that can happen if you win...

Sheriff Joe has the right idea. Cyclone fenced in tent cities, no TV, all pink uniforms, no beards, no long hair, porridge for brekkie, P-nut butter sammiches for lunch, gruel for dinner, plain water to drink, no smoking allowed, work details for extra privileges. Make jail so they won't want to come back, even if the ex-Governor has to share his "gravy" job of making license plates.  D>K Steve

This is a strange concept for me:  The sheriff election is partisan?   Here in Oregon the sheriff election is non-partisan.

The BIG 6 in Macomb County are all partisan:

Clerk
Treasurer
Prosecutor
Drain Commissioner
Sheriff, and
The BIG Kahuna - County Executive

Each is directly elected by those of 860,000 people who chose to vote; about 20% in the primary.

Each is responsible to the people within their position and not under each other.

Thanks for your help"keeping the peace" during the BBQ Saturday night at the BeanField . You never know when those retired stunt flying Canadians are going to break out in unrestrained civil discord . I was nervous when the beer ran out .

Brad,
The coordinated running out of beer and the setting of the sun were perfect.  Just having Paul there did fill the gap that was needed with Dudley missing though.
