Morning Photo in NATS Photo thread
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:00:01 AM »
As soon as I saw this photo I knew it would make a great background for the Awards software.

http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=9967.0

Understand the photo cannot be used for any commercial ventures so none of the sample images below will go beyond this forum. In reality they can't be used anyway, they have been resized and blowing them back up would degrade the resolution to the point the result would be less than ideal.

Anyway thought the image would be a great subject to show how a simple background can be created fairly easily in PhotoShop. If you end up with the Award software and would like to use this image for you club you will need to contact Dennis Vander Kuur for permission. Dennis if you feel I am in any way violating your copy rights with this thread let me know and I will ask it be deleted.

1st photo is after I overlayed an area for the contestants photo, simple square box...
2nd photo shows the mask image created from the original. A mask image is necessary to tell the software the location and the shape of the cutout.
3rd image is after a couple lines of text are added. This text will show up on all awards created using this background.
4th image is after it has been loaded into the Awards program with contestants photo, Place, Event text and ready to print.

Bob,
I posted the picture on both forums and also sent it to Steve Helmick (he asked to post it on the NW Skyraider's website in several downloadable sizes so it would be easily accessible to others).
http://www.nwskyraiders.com/index.html
Tom McClain also requested and received copies of the original for possible use in Stunt News.
My purpose in doing all this was to share this inspirational picture with my fellow fliers. I felt it captured some of the spirit and joy of our hobby. The picture is a gift from me to my fellow modelers for their personal use and enjoyment. Your use of the picture on this thread, for creating contest awards, or any other personal use is fine. I hope you enjoyed the picture as much as I did.
I did not take or publish the picture for financial gain and have therefore requested that others not use it for commercial purposes.

Dennis,
It's one of the best pictures I've ever seen and I've seen alot of Elwyn's masterpieces. You are very generous in sharing what you've captured on film. Thanks

Dennis,

I hope that Tom McClain uses the picture for a Stunt News cover.

Some one posted on the other forum about this photo and made the comment that the plane looked huge.
They just dont realize just how small that Chist is, but for that matter I make my planes look large also.
Glad you were the subject of a great photo.
Wish I had been there this year.

I have this photo on my desktop. I call it the "Dawn Patrol" also. For some reason, that name came to me right away also. I don't know why, but for some reason, this photo really hit a chord with me.

Marshall,
Yeah, we are some of the giants in the hobby!  The plane is only 615 square inches of wing area.  No problem on the name thing.

You know every time Crist does a wingover or overhead 8, his plane lifts him off of the circle.  That is why he carries 20 lbs of lead in his pants.

Crist and Marshall,
YES, you both are giants in the sport, and it's because of your positive input wherever you go!  Missed ya Marshall, it's been way too long.

Been playing again.. Need to make the radial cylinders smaller so it won't cut off heads but this will give everyone an idea of what can be done. I have got to quit playing with backgrounds and get the darn software ready to release :)

Bob...we used this famous picture as a participants award at our trimming clinic. Everybody got the same award, in this case, but maybe you could work with the picture, anyway. Can't do much better than Wilbur & Orville's first flight photo...Dave Gardner worked the confuser magic on this award, as usual.  y1 Steve
