Modifying the Brodak .40 1st generation muffler.
« on: May 29, 2012, 02:56:58 PM »
Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a first generation B40 and was wondering if any of you had good results modifying the standard muffler? If so, what were the mods performed on the muffler?
Pictures would be great!
Thanks,
-Dan H^^

Find someone with a Brodak 25 and trade mufflers, you will both be happier.

Hi Bob,

I have a brodak 25. Are you saying interchanging the two mufflers will make both run happier?

Thanks

-Dan

They are the same muffler except the early 40 has a smaller outlet hole. The 25 came out after they changed the muffler and most 25's I've seen came with the larger outlet muffler. The 25 likes the original 40 muffler kinda like the FP 20 likes the OS muffler.

Hey Daniel,

If you haven't modified (Screwed up) the first generation muffler (with the smaller outlet) I'll gladly trade you one with the larger outlet. Why? Because the larger outlets are much nosier and less efficient (fuel milage wise) than the smaller ones.

I never knew that there are different generation mufflers for the .40.

I've got a modified tip, (much larger outlet) on one of my Brodak .40's. It's a Dan McEntee mod. It does seem to honk along pretty well now, I think a little more power than before. I'll try to get some pics of it here soon.

I'm pretty sure my Brodak .40s are first generation, and the mufflers are the same as some of the later versions I've bought and seen. They are the same as the muffler that came on my Brodak .25. When I first acquired the .25, I wasn't impressed with the power it put out at all, more like amazed at the lack of power. Tom Hampshire contacted me after I made a post or two about the situation here on the list and had me send him my engine, and he sent it back with the modified muffler like Wayne is mentioning. It really woke the engine up and makes much better power. If the stock muffler restricted the exhaust that much on a .25, i was eager to try it on the .40, and the power increase was very noticeable, and the break was much harder. For the model I have the .40 on, I wanted the softer break so I went back to the stock muffler. I imagine a head shim or similar would do the trick also. All the Brodak mufflers I have seen have been the same and would like to see a photo of the one in question with a smaller outlet just to satisfy my curiosity.
  Type at you later,

Hi Guys,

Sorry for taking so muchtime replying.
Here is a picture  of the two different mufflers. The one on the left is a first generation B40. The one on the right is a NEW (2012) muffler.

Thanks for the illustration Phil.
Question: Your mod shows three holes. Should I assume 6 holes total?
Thanks,
-dan

It is a continuous line of holes from one side to the other. I used 2 staggered rows of 3/32" holes.

Here's the one on my Zero. The end with the stock weeny tailpipe was cut off of the rear half of the muffler right where the taper began on the main muffler body. Then, a new completely new exhaust end cap was machined and installed. Since the original front to rear connector bolt is lost with this adaptation I JB Welded the front and rear halves together. Works great! y1

And what is the  DB level?   I know in some RC areas they check sound level.   Has it ever been done in control line? H^^

Looks good wayne!!

BTW, the B25 outlet size is halfway between the 1st generation B40 and last generation B40.

I've never checked it Doc, but it doesn't seem any worse than stock. Hey, that rhymes! :##
