Now many CL fliers are there?
« on: August 06, 2008, 07:37:53 AM »
I feel there may be a lot more than we think because of all the following.

There are kit and equipment manufactures world wide.
There are probably 500 to 1000 cottage shops in the USA.

I wonder if the AMA would tell us now many members list CL as there reason to belong to AMA?

I think Pampa has 850 to 900 member's. I think that is a drop in the bucket. I know many who do not join Pampa.

The number of ARF and ARC kits that are coming out or are already available.

I think John Brodak could give us a good guess on this.

What do you think?

well  my thoughts are there are many more ARM CHAIR  CL/ers out there than  once a week lets do it guys.  Mostly  because of  lack of close sites. Also remember when most of us got hooked on this hobby we had not yet built FAMILYS yet.  some had to put away the hobby  and be the family guy.. now when the kids are gone and the honey do list is getting shorter  some of us are coming  back to active Duty. Daily someone stops by   with the same story. I did that once, might be fun to try again. i even think i have a old engine or two .How do you find stuff???? haven't seen u/c stuff for years. we try to help. but the ratio of comebacks is to low . well it is 7.12 a.m. need to quit rambling on and get out to  DELTA PARK where we set up Mondays Wensdays .Fridays for great BS and coffee  . I  just remembered we got  Thursday this week GEOFFREY and RICHARD have a good day

Chuck,

Don't know the total number of CL guys---the PAMPA site shows 1374 members.

Maybe someone could ask about the number of customers some of the suppliers have and come up with a SWAG number...........

Cheers,
Jim

We have almost 1700 members around the world. Some won't join the forum for whatever reason.

Might be possible to find out how many AMA members put down CL as one of their interests on the membership list.

This of course would not cover those who just fly on their own.

Interesting comments, Thanks keep them coming. I did just as many  of you did. When young (1950's) got a firebaby etc you all know the story. Then came the service. Then the family era and work. Then retirement, I did manage to teach my kids to fly and in 1978 flew in the Nats in Lake Charles. Bob Whitely won. We all flew open in that time. I was second!  Meaning I was the second one to leave. LOL But I did it.
Retirement found me struggling Now what? You all know that story its the same as yours. This is great sport to back into. I enjoy it very much. I enjoy all of you to. Yes' <= ^-^

Looking at all the eastern European and Asian entries at the WC, I conclude that PA is wildly popular.  Multiply that by many orders of magnitude for all those who do not compete at the WC level.

While we may think that the U.S. has a lock on PA,  the story world-wide may be quite different!

I can safely conclude there are more bagpipers in the USA than CL fliers.  How do I know this?  Well, I've done both!

...and I've never gotten a free beer for flying a model airplane.    (PE**)

I Have over 2800 customers, so there is no way to really know, but I wouls take a guess that there maybe 3500 to 4500 CL flyers here. I can tell you that there are a lot of sport flyers that never go to contest and are not  AMA or PAMPA members

I know of two C/L guys right here in my neighborhood that have NO interest in AMA, PAMPA, or clubs of any kind. Plus, several others that are buying C/L stuff from the hobby shop, but don't want to meet up with other ukie pilots.

Weirdos!
