Models/Designs entered at VSC?
« on: November 01, 2016, 12:04:45 AM »
Has anyone of the VSC organizers kept a good record of the planes that have entered? If so, is there a list somewhere that could be posted?

After talking to couple people about building something for upcoming VSC's, it was mentioned that too many of the same designs show up year after year in both Classic and OTS. Of course there always seems to be a few rare ones, too. But if you want to build something never before entered, you'd need to see a database list. I know Stunt News always has had VSC results published. Anyone have all the results and want to take it on?

Hi Clint. Yes, there is a place on line that lists every model gong back to, I think, VSC 5 or 6.  I printed them out, but will have to look up the site for you. Later, Ty M. H^^

Thanks Ty!

Thank you, Ty. Those results go through '08. That's a great start!

It's too bad they just start with VSC10.  I'm of the strong opinion that the earlier VSC's starting with 2 would show much more variety of early designs.  Things hadn't settled out yet on what the best fliers were yet and the contests were more of a what did you bring than what is competitive!

Clint, one that I'd like to see that probably hasn't showed up at a VSC was the "Moody Mooney", based on the Mooney Mite. I can't think of the designer right now. It looks well engineered, a bit challenging, but I know you could do a fine job on it. It had trike gear, Johnson SS, and was published in AAM. Might be too big for a B.40, tho.  H^^ Steve

Hi Don,

Would you post them for us (couch potato's) please? Also if there is a plan you could post for the Moody Mooney? And NO Clint, I have no intention of stealing your idea! I just love to see old planes plans! Say that five time fast!

Yup, maybe starting with #1 at Whittier Narrows. Pretty sure Mike didn't start it to be a serious competition.  y1

Damned sure didn't!  But now it seems to've evolved into a "Jamison/Humongous" event, at least in Old Time.  Wasn't my intention at all.

Nah, wouldn't be stealing any ideas from me.

My intention of the thread was just to compile (or how to compile) a complete list of all the model designs flown at VSC. There's been a bunch, but not nearly all the available ones. I was hoping someone, somewhere maybe had all that info in one place. Maybe not.

There are plans for the Moody Mooney out there, I have seen one but don't remember when or how. The model was published in Air Trails and should be available from AMA.  Here is the list from VSC 1, OTS and Classic. (*) = number of that airplane entered.  OTS- All American (5)  Ringmaster (4)  Barnstormer (3)  50 Plymouth Internats winner, Yates Dragon,  Nobler,  Super Zilch,  Sterling P-51,  Madman,  Sportsman.
Classic. Panther,  Lark,  All American,  Smoothie,  P-63 profile,  Ares (2),  Thunderbird (2),  Nobler(2),  El Conquistador,  Tempest,  Warrior,  Shoestring,  Fierce Arrow.
My first C/L contest since 1955, placed 8th with the Dragon. I also have the names of the pilots of each airplane. Ted Fancher OTS, Bob Whitely, Classic were the event winners. A cool misty day!

Take a look at the spar and wing design in the Moody Mooney.  Very different!  I think that Lloyd Curtiss also designed some other pretty unique model airplanes back then.

Steve,

If this is the same one that is listed in the "John Pond" plan catalog # 84G1, (Which is now available from AMA plan service) it has a 54" WS and should be just about right for a B-40, IMHO!

Cheers, Jerry
