Milwaukee Hobby Shops?
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:16:57 PM »

 Hey folks,

I'm planning on making a quick trip to Milwaukee this coming Sunday and Monday. Are there any good hobby shops worth checking out?

Hi Wayne,

Try Greenfield News and Hobby on 60th and Layton Av. This is the largest hobby shop in the Milwaukee area. Go to their website to get directions.

Greenfield News and Hobby focuses on r/c and has a good supply of radios, accessories, fuel and covering.  Fewer and fewer kits to build are carried.  As a bonus they have about every airplane, train and car magazine published.  Very little in control line.

Another option is the three Happy Hobby stores.  Theses are owned and run by one family.  They are at about 85th and National (you'd be close to this one if you were going to go to Greenfield), about 80th and Burleigh, and 76th and Good Hope.  The stores are extremely cluttered and packed to the gills with stock.  The Good Hope store has some old kits (mostly r/c). The National store had control line kits last time I was there.  They have lots of engines and masses and masses of plastic models.  Much out of production.  Old control liners hanging from the ceiling.  Burleigh has mostly plastic models.  All opening around 10 or 11; I don't know about Sunday.

As a caveat I haven't been to any of the Happy Hobby stores in a couple of years.  The addresses are approximate.

The Happy Hobby on 83'rd and national burned down in January.  Some of the inventory was saved and moved to the other stores.

The one on 76'th is fun to poke through, but is very messy.

Interesting. Which Happy Hobby location has the old control liners hanging from the ceiling?

All of them did, but the one that burned had the most.  He had a lot of out of production kits, and they were not cheap.   However the last time I was in his inventory as down a bit.  If you want to visit one I would visit the one on 76th and Good Hope.

Just a heads up to my modeling friends here...

If anyone here ever gets to the Milwaukee area and is wanting to swing by a hobby shop, DO NOT waste a second of your life to bother finding or stopping at either of the Happy Hobby locations. I stopped at both locations today and honestly, I was left in a state of shock. I literally got a shiver up my spine after leaving the second location. Both facilities are so absolutely disgusting that, without a doubt, they should be condemned and closed to the public. I'm normally not "That Guy", but I'm actually tempted to contact the local Chamber of Commerce about it. And with this description, I'm being polite about what I walked into. Unreal.

On a better note I also swung by Greenfield News and Hobby. As is typical these days they didn't have much for our C/L needs but it was a large shop carrying a ton of hobby and craft items combined with a great magazine newsstand section. Nice, clean, well organized and worthy of a stop. D>K
