New classic P-47 ready to fly
« on: February 05, 2025, 10:33:48 AM »
After three years of off and on work, my new classic airplane is finished and just about ready to fly. This P-47 is my grandfathers design from 1967. He flew his for a long time, then I had it for a while in college. I last flew that plane after the 2021 NATS and it still flew great! At that moment I knew I needed to build one of my own. I took a copy of his plans home and got to work. My grandpa redrew the plans since the paper the original plans are on is extremely fragile now.

Power is an LA 46, weight came out to 54oz. Wing area is somewhere in the 610-620”^2 range. Now I just wait for a decent day to put it in the air

Totally cool Matt!   I always liked the Razorback P-47 best.   I hope I get to see it fly.

I've seen Don's fly, and it was as good as a plane of that era got. You did a great job Matt, and I like your rendition of it.

Great story behind that build. Hopefully you get good weather soon to test it out. Post a video!

Thank you everyone! For right now, I guess plans are available, just need to copy what I have. Buy one of the local guys in Dallas is going to work on getting it scanned and traced into his CAD program and he can cut parts for it. Exciting things to come from that potentially

Nicely done Matt!  Did I understand you correctly, there may be a kit of this beauty in the future?  Put me down for one!

Thanks Don! I’m not committing to anything yet, first things first is the one with the CNC machine wants to build one himself

Don’t know. Got a couple of these off Joe Gilbert. He calls them the skinny prop. 12” diameter, pitch around 4.3 to start

Finally got the first four flights on the P-47 today after a couple months of waiting around. Of the four flights, three were full patterns! The airplane flies great! I couldn’t be happier having this as my new weapon for classic. So far all I’ve done is a flap tweak, pushrods adjustment and it needs a tank shim

For those who have had interest in this plane, there is something in the works. Stay tuned. In the meantime, I do have the plans scanned onto my computer I can email to those who are interested
