Mid-Iowa Controliners Spring Kick Off Results
« on: May 08, 2011, 05:19:04 PM »
Saturday was a nice day. OTS, Classic, and Profile was flown. I didn't get the results from Saturday. Here are the results from Sunday. Sunday started out breezy and ended windy. A lot of guys passed on the second round.

Sam Sciorrotta was awarded the Con Cours plaque.
This year was the first year for a new award which was the Sportsmanship Award. It was presented to Bob Baldus.
Both of these awards were sponsered by Bob Brookins. Well done Bob.

Turn out was light due to the first weekend in May falling on Mother's Day along with several college graduations. Next year will be better I'm sure.

Look like a beautiful day with lots of friends and good flying.  I love the pictures and especially love the Skyraider on takeoff roll.

I second that emotion! And regarding the Skyraider, is that a Midwest kit? This is one contest I was going to try and make this year. Something always gets in the way.

Yeah Dan, it was a good 'ol 48" Midwest one complete with a Redhead McCoy .35. It was pretty cool to see one out there. With the gusty conditions on Saturday it gave a big wobble or stall, usually both, with every corner. I lost count but I think the pilot used all nine lives with it on Saturday, but he kept hanging in there and kept it out of the dirt. He flew it again today when it was even more windy.

I didn't get his name, but with a better flying plane I bet he'd be dangerous. y1

Hope to catch ya at Sig!

 Mid-Iowa. :##

Actually it's held at the Mid-Iowa Controliners club field located in Big Creek State Park just outside Polk City, IA. It's roughly 20 miles NNW of Des Moines.

Gary is an excellent builder and flyer who I've known for many years.  He doesn't do "computer" though so many don't even know him through the forums.

He makes the Sig contest every once in a while, too.

Was thinking of coming up, but, I have excuses.  For one the Ford is still not running and I don't trust the Toyota.  My oldest got married for the third time on Saturday.  Then Mothers Day on Sunday.   Will try for next year if some show up at Topeka for a change.   D>K

I spend about a month in Cherokee spraying in July. Maybe I can catch a break and make it down this summer.  rog

Thanks for filling in that blank on the Skyraider Mike. ;D

It was some great entertainment, but also pretty nerve-wracking watching Gary work through the pattern with it. He would certainly deserve a perserverance award if there was one!
I'm sure he had fun, I know a bunch of us watching in the "Peanut Gallery" did, but I just kept thinking how well he'd be doing with a better flying package. Some of his saves were amazing and he just kept on going and going. The combination of that thin old Midwest wing and the gusty winds were sure not in his favor. There was a lot of times where the plane appeared to just stop moving and be literally hanging on the prop of the McCoy. Great stuff!

Thanks for all your work and for putting on a great contest! H^^

  Hey Wayne;
Food for thought. Midwest Skyraider with Geiske Nobler wing? Have to get the plans out and measure that one up. Kinda like that Sukoi of yours that you did such a nice job on. The airplane I got through intermediate and into advanced with was a kit bashed/scratch built model that started out as a Midwest ME-109, with a SIG Chipmunk wing, an a Rabe style nose. Flew pretty well and is still hanging in the garage ready for action.

Cherokee is about 3 hours, driving, from Polk City.   When we get our summer club schedule worked out, I'll let you know what 'planned' club events are going on - most weekends and decent evenings we try to get someone out to the field.

PM me with an email address, if you wish.
