Micro Fasteners - what do you order?
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:25:51 AM »
I'm on the site but not sure what cap screws to get. I know I want 4-40 and 1&1/2 inches long. Do I get the stainless or the alloy steel?

I like the stainless steel ones, but the alloy ones work as break-away bolts in a crash and can help save a motor. H^^

No need for stainless in model airplanes.  I dont like stainless because of possible gauling.

Depending on what the "alloy" is in the MicroFasteners, they are likely stonger than stainless and will not work as break away.  You would have to do the research to know for sure.  Find out from Micro what the alloy is,  go to the McMaster Carr website, they have lots of technical reference info on all their products.   If you want bulk quantities of screws (box of 100) you can get your sockets heads there.  Mc Master has a huge selection.  Other modeling stuff I get from them:  phenolic sheet (motor pads), A2 tool steel drill rod and .060" steel plate for making tweakable control horns,  brazing rod and flux,  silicone tubing for header/pipe coupling,   thumbsrews and plastic knobs for making jigs.

Another great item they have are wash or squeeze bottles.   They work great for dispensing thinners and solvents,  minimizes waste.  Get the wide mouth style for easy filling,  and several differnt colors for identification.

Paul , they offer a terrific 4-40 kit. Within the kit you have the bolts your looking for and some shorter ones as well. There is also regular steel screws with steel hex nuts, lock washers, flat washers, and Nyloc nuts as well. All in all I've found this kit to be very useful at home but especially at the field. It makes for a great kit when your doing Junkyard Wars as well. You need the long length bolts when going through that crate wood. The box is approx 4 " wide and about 8" long. I'm not sure of the cost, my father purchased mine for me as a gift. Ken

Paul,
For 4-40 size bolts you can use stainless but it is unnecessary, especially for engine mounting bolts.  There's always plenty of oil in that environment and the black oxide finish is adequate.  I would never use Cad plated hardware in a high stress environment because the process is sensitive to latent stress fractures if not properly done.  Unfortunately there no way to tell whether they are affected until they break.
In any case you want to use grade 8 fasteners for high stress applications like engine mounting bolts.  Stainless bolts are 15-20 % lower in ultimate tensile strength than carbon steel (grade eight).
