Mickey Mouse Club Season 1 Episode 2
« on: August 27, 2020, 05:48:44 AM »
A friend turned me on to this one. There is a great segment where control line flying is featured. 1955!  I am wondering if there is anyone here who either took part or knows the people who did. Would be a great story!

I remember a segment that featured a control line contest on the original Mickey Mouse Club, seems they had a stunt ship with either an Atwood 60 or Super Cyclone. I don't know what series or theme day it was part of on the show.

There was also a time they had a circle at Disneyland in CA. I think Billy Werwage may have flown their. There was also a Cox sponsored time when they had their models giving demonstrations. These were featured on the "World of Disney" show when they were promoting Disneyland. Bart Klapinski  flew there in1957 ( http://www.modelaviation.com/disney-flight-circle). The area was in Tomorrow Land and call Hobbyland Flight Circle and it was active till 1966.

Found the one I was thinking of. It was from the first season in 1955, episode 1. A contest at "Fairmont High". It was filmed in the Disney lot in Burbank. Maybe this was continued in episode 2 and more?

Am I seeing that correctly? - 1/3 of the Disney flight circle was over water?  Must have made for some interesting landings.

Yeah, Bart was a member of the local club that handled the chores at Disneyland. The venue was started by Wen-Mac, then Cox took it over. I talked to a guy at KidVenture one year that said he was a kid back then and worked that venue. He said he still had a stack of PT-19 wings at home! There is a picture on the cover of an issue of Flying Models that shows the set up and a short story inside I think.  The photo of the circle kind of distorts the depth perception, but the pond is just off the circle. They ran the Cox Water Wizards in the pond.

Bart would fly three airplanes at a time!

Another shot of part of the circle and some of the Cox planes and cars they used to run there.
