Title: Merco 35 ABC sets Expressions of interest?
Post by: Brian Gardner on September 23, 2016, 09:34:56 PM
G'day Fellas,

I've considered doing ABC piston/liner/rod/pin sets for the Merco 35. ( I used to have 2 of them and they were great ).

I would do some heads also as the originals were pretty soft and prone to stripping the plug thread.

Can I have a bit of a 'show of hands' as to how many people would be definitely interested?

It depends on which model of the Merco. The redhead ones, the blackhead ones or the last version that used the cylinder/piston assembly that wasn't a drop-in liner/piston. In any event I'd be interested. By the way, I received the LA25 sets some days ago. Thanks!

I would be interested in 2

Are you planning on a repeat set of the Tigre 51's?
I am guessing you would have a lot of takers for those as well.

Brian - I'd be interested in the HP40.  Might you put up a post asking for a survey of which engine p/l sets  would sell, rather than single examples?  Sorry for the slight hijack...

I would also be interested in 5 of the HP40

Maybe replicate the ones Tom has?

I tend to only take on one new thing at a time. ST46, 51 & 60 are currently in production. Shortly we'll do the LA46. I'm even doing the YS60 RC pattern motor for someone. So things are pretty busy.

These would be for the red head and black head version of the Merco 35.

I do recall reading about the popularity of the HP40 but have never laid eyes on one myself. Refresh my memory. Were they a good 4/2/4 engine stock or were they universally modified?

Brian, they were a high speed r/c engine, typically modified by taking off a little of the squish band and raising the intake ports.  If you want to do one, I can loan you aftermarket piston/liner sets or measure them up.  Apologies for thread drift.

I like to have a complete motor to work with.

The aftermarket piston/liners you have for the HP -  are they stunt timed? No need to re-invent the wheel if there is already something that is proven to work.

The Earlier ones were lower timed , Gold Cup was 120 / 140 ish .

My First RPR had a PAPER Gasket Under the Sleeve Flange  :P
Removed the timing was 110 / 130 . This did a 2-2-2 , but It WASNT . As It was 2-2-2-2 or 2-2-2-2-2 , as in a Three Stage Powerband .  ;D

Late Gold Cups were abc , most others DYKES RING .

The Usual was the FR , rather than the RPR , but I wouldnt have FOUR RPRs if I thought they wernt any good . ;D

Bill Wewages Peroquet Ran One .

Henry Nelson was the Supplyier of a pair .

1974 HP 40F R.C. , is  44 / 43 on the crank & 140 / 120 / 108 on the sleeve .

nov. 1979  Gold Cup    33    57                      144 / 126 /  112

nov. 1973  R.P.R.        43    63                     140   120  104

According to the Sceptre Flight tripe . seems about right . Other THINGS garnerable there . They whinge about variability on the earlier ones and  say to wake up their ideas on Q.C .

My N.i.B. was labled 69 !? - so mustve been made before they started making them .  ;) might eplain the Low Sleeve on a PYLON ENGINE , unless someone'd been at it .

Brian, will the Merco  sleeve and cyl have any more power than the original?  Thanks

It will be smoother running. More power, perhaps a tiny bit with the improved fits & seal.

We have enough numbers. So these will happen.

But possibly not till the new year. We have ST46, 51 & 60, LA46, Fox 35 shafts and others to get through first.

Wasted words but, if you make Fox 35 cranks you can leave the front of the crankweb flat since there is a good relief around the bushing in the case. This will give a thicker crankweb and slightly more counter weight win win.

What we really need for the Fox 35 is straight connecting rods.

Sure, why not?
And make that two sets. I just checked and I have one redhead and one blackhead motor.

      Hello Mr. Gardner:

I too would be interested in P&C for the HP Gold Cup .40 engines.

                                                                                          Thank you,

Brian,

I too would like a set of P&C, rod, Wrist pin, and head for the HP 40 Gold Cup, if you make them!

This is a light powerful stunt engine especially suited for the larger Classic airplanes.

One of the pioneers in using this engine successfully for Stunt was Bob McDonald.  In fact he won VSC a couple of years ago with one in very tough competition, in one of his designs from the early 70's.  Great running engine that would still be in use today if parts etc. hadn't died.  He would be an excellent person to talk to about mods etc.

I presently am running an HP40 in one of my ARF Noblers and the engine runs great. Not your typical 4 2 4 break more like a wet 2 cycle. It turns an 11x5 prop very nicely and is light weight to boot. A very nice engine actually. PhillySkip
