The Meet n'Meat is this weekend at the WDA site in Davis. And of course The Hurl is this weekend. As the Assistant Commissioner of the Hurl (self-appointed), I am here to notify everyone that the Hurl Commission has determined that attendance is mandatory this year. Please make a note of it!

I am sure it was engraved on the official Hurl Monument (which is of course inaccessible right now, for reasons that require no explanation), but as I recall it was more like 186 feet, which included the 10 "geezer points" that were in effect at the time. This was set under the canonical conditions into a relatively light headwind.
The official record is still the 254 feet, set with a strong aiding wind, and at a currently prohibited flight azimuth. That was also before synthetic testosterone test kits were easily available to the general public. Note that Melky Cabrera's and Bartolo Colon's MLB suspension applies to the Hurl as well, so, Bartolo, just stay home and eat more donuts.
Of course, any Hurl suspensions are mutually recognized by all major sports. As I recall, all the suspensions in recent years have timed out, and we never actually decided to ban Ron Burn for his numerous and flagrant Rule 69 violations committed last year about this time, controversial as they were.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the 254 ft Hurl unofficial due the Hurler playing semipro ball that year?
Rule 13 section 2 paragraph2.
Participants of the event are declared ineligible if said participant has played professional or semi professional baseball within the last twelve months.

I can never claim that any Hurl participant is intelligible.

Hey, no fair, editing like that...
Back to the serious question - yes, the 234 (yes, I had that wrong above, fortunately the Hurl Central Archives had it correct) foot hurl was by an ineligible (by the afore mentioned Rule 13) participant. This obviated the need for testing for PEDs (or species, for that matter) which leaves those questions wide open. Note that there is no gender testing required either - the Hurl is open to all on an equal basis regardless of gender, or, shall we say, choice of "lifestyle".
By the way, I do not know if Mr. World Champ Troublemaker will attend (or risk the ultimate sanction for missing the mandatory event). We should certainly prepare all documentation necessary to suppress any further attempts to disrupt the event by frivoulous protest. The new codicil to Rule 44 should cover it, I think. It is however sad that one bad apple can spoil an otherwise pristine and beautiful event.

I am so glad that you are on top of this. Rule 44 does in fact cover this, so there should be no problem here.
At the risk of sounding arrogant, this will be a moot point as I , at this time declare myself eligible for the 'World Famous Fox .15 Hurl" this year. I have the proper documentation that states that I have not played any organized baseball for the last three years.
I hit he Juggs gun at 84 MPH last month and feel confidant that record will be broken at Woodland this weekend.
I feel bad for those that will not be there to witness this historical event.

Indeed. It will be like a million Superbowls all at once. But I don't want to oversell it.

Mandatory or not, I just can't make the trip, unless Howard wants to swing by and pick me up on the way, he seems to get around. @@^

You clearly misunderstand the meaning of the word mandatory.
United Flight 4004, leaves Tampa at 7:00AM tomorrow morning, arrives SFO 5:48. No excuses!

Does it stop at DFW for any reason??? There are a few of Texas that would like a shot at the ever infamous "Fox .15 Hurl World Championship" I am certain I can pass the PED test you might even find a kidney stone in my sample!!

Boy oh boy, it would be awesome if you could make it. In the eleven year history of the "World Famous Fox .15 Hurl"There has only been one instance where the "Hurl" champ and the NATS champ held both titles the same year.

Ha! Properly set up the potato gun can beat the 234 foot hurl. The rules just need to be modified to accommodate said device.

Dear Mr Buck,
I must regretfully inform you that I purposefully and willfully neglected to catch that 7AM flight this morning. As I'm sure you know, where art imitates life, I have chosen to deal with the comparatively nonexistent fine rather than comply with your mandatory decree. I'm sure in future, once you have hired enough thugs to enforce said fines, these fines will shortly thereafter be increased to an amount commensurate to the crime. It is my prediction that only at that juncture will you then get the mandatory participation you desire. In the meantime, I will enjoy my time as a scofflaw.
Sincerely,
EricV

Perhaps we should add a Midwest Hurl at the Broken Arrow contest in St. Louis next year. It's usually on the same weekend as M&M.
That way the midwest, east coast, and southeast folks could fulfill their commitments without travelling quite so far.
Just need the official rules from Uncle Jimby and we can do it! y1

The Fox Hurl is complete. Records were set. Champions were dethroned. It was more excitement than we should have been allowed.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and we are considering having remote-site Hurls, which appropriate weighting factors, of course. See:

But I would caution/remind you that the *only place to get the official rules is from Authorized Media from the Office of the Commissioner*. Uncle Jimby is of course a great supporter of the Hurl, but he is not on the Central Staff and cannot provide the rules to you directly. The shortwave broadcasts are authorized and probably the most immediate means of obtaining up-to-date information. If parchment copies are required, those can be provided for a nominal fee with an expected delivery time of 18 months. Of course these are actually transcribed by hand as Xerographic or photographic reproduction is, obviously, forbidden.

Am having a difficult time finding the "official" rules.
I see many references to specific numbered rules on various threads on the Stuka Stunt forums and one mysteriously called "The David Fitzgerald rule" but no complete compilation of the rules.
Having no shortwave and not speaking spanish and not having 18 months until our next Broken Arrow contest to await a proper transcription nor seeing a factor listed for Valley Park, Missouri I am puzzled as to how we can implement a Hurl here in the great midwest in the swirling winds of Buder Park in September of 2013. Also knowing the layout of said Buder Park flying field and the compass points therein, it is not possible to hurl at the proscribed 20-30 degrees north direction without putting parked cars in great danger of an airborne Fox 15 launched by one of the many athletes that populate the September contest.
Unless these and other issues are addressed we may be forced into going rogue and implementing yet another event further fragmenting our already fragmented sport/hobby.
Any help, of an official nature, will be appreciated.

As Deputy Commissioner (self-appointed), I will take your case forward to the Central Committee at the next meeting. It may be permitted only as a demonstration event. As previously mentioned, we need the lat/long, altitude, the location and magnitude of any gravitational or magnetic anomalies within 200 miles, just the normal stuff, nothing exotic in order to compute the acceptable hurl azimuth, weighting factors, etc. Al be prepared to pass the organizer qualification test, nothing difficult there, as long as you have a good general knowledge of Hurl history and Rat Patrol trivia, you will have no significant problems with that.
As for difficulty in obtaining a copy of the rules, you have to understand that parchment is required, and that requires the hides of many animals. Paper is ephemeral, the Hurl is forever, so parchment is the only acceptable physical medium. There's no real way to speed up the process, it simply takes a finite amount of time for a sheep to grow to an adequate size. I think, as of last accounting, we were getting several Hurl scrolls from each medium-sized sheep, so generally thats about 15 sheep per complete rules set. So you see our problem. That's why the shortwave network was established in the first place.
I would strongly suggest getting a shortwave radio for home use - the modern world is here and as computers fade into the dustbin of history, you will need a way of keeping in contact. As a good general performer on the bands used for the HIN (Hurl Information Network), I would suggest the Zenith Stratosphere 1000z as a starter radio. With careful shopping it can be obtained for under $20000. You will also be able to listen to the ball game on it! Such a deal.
On a related topic, I would like to mention that the Commissioner has charged me with a task of creating an index to the rules. That way, when you hear references to them, you will at least know where it falls in the total scope. That will be forthcoming.
