Meet 'n Meat Detour
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:53:41 AM »

Hi Everyone:

As some of you probably know, there will be some road work going on near the site which will prevent us from taking our usual routes to the flying field.  Here are written directions from Doug Barton as well as a link to a map.  It will take a few more minutes to get to the field, so please plan accordingly.  Tell your buddies, as well.  See you this week end.

For the Meet-N-Meat contest this weekend, if you are coming from the east, south, or from the Bay Area on I-80:

Take the Mace Blvd. off ramp from I-80 (3-4 miles east of the HWY113/ I-80 interchange) and go north to the bottom of the overpass.

Turn RT. onto Rd. 32A and you will be going east and parallel to the railroad tracks.

Continue east to Rd. 105.  Turn left and go north about 2.5 miles.

Turn left onto RD. 29 which is a gravel road.  Do not go over the drainage canal bridge.

Take RD. 29 west 1.8 miles to the flying field.

If you are coming from Woodland on SR 113 or CO.RD 102, go to Rd 27 then east to RD. 103.

Turn RT. and go south to the end and turn left on RD. 28H.

Go east past the landfill to RD. 105. turn RT. and cross the bridge.

Turn RT. onto RD. 29 and come back west 1.8 miles to the flying field.

Jimby...For future reference (hopefully), I was looking at the map and scaled out the 1.8 miles west from 105 rd. Near some drainage ponds (long green things that go N & S), but couldn't find anything that looked like a flying field (in Satellite view). It's got to be to the south of 29 rd, because 28H is close to the north of 29 rd, and not a lot of room between. How far off of 29 rd is the flying field? Will there be some temporary signage?  SH^ It would be disgusting for somebody to get there and not find the field. Bump!   H^^ Steve

Hi Steve, Let me butt in here as I'm familiar with the arrangements and Jim's directions are pretty accurate. There will not be temporary signage. We tried, the road department nixed our efforts, saying it would confuse the general public.   HB~>. The C/L circles will be on your left, maybe a 100 yards off of Rd 29. Not hard to see. R/C planes may be flying as well. As you turn onto Rd 29 look up and you will see a 700' radio antenna about 2.0 miles away. Drive toward it. If you get there, you have missed the field, turn around and try again. The road you will be on is very wash-boarded. If you are on a paved road, you are on the wrong side of the canal.

I too checked Google maps and you are correct about the drainage ponds. The flying site is near there but it does not show up in the satelite view. However, if you click on the "pictures" function a picture of the field (labeled and everything) will pop up. Don't worry, it's a lot greener now than it was in the photo. I'll PM you my phone #, if you get lost, we will send out a search party. Hope this helps.

With Pete's hint about using Googly Maps instead of MapQuest, I finally found the flying field, just west of those two skinny slime green ponds. And to be perfectly clear, I'm not coming down. Actually, we have a club Fun Fly at Scobee Field, and I'm the guy in charge, since PFerg is on TDY in Florida. Besides, I don't have a Fox .15 to hurl, and that's probably just as well.  :( Steve

PS: I don't like Google Maps any better than I like Google Chrome, which isn't logical to me. But I gotta admit, Google Maps does have some advantages if you can figure it out. The county roads don't show up for chit, but the photo thing is kewl.
