MECOA is selling FOX parts
« on: July 30, 2017, 12:16:31 PM »

I went to the MECOA site to look for parts for a K&B and noticed they are selling some FOX engine parts and there is an announcement of a new website for fox.
                                                                                                                                                                    Juan

" No problem! My old man is a TV repairman, has the ULTIMATE set of tools...............I can fix it!"

But seriously folks! Depending on the damage, I have repaired broken and cracked engine cases by careful TIG welding. I have done a couple fo ST.46s that had cracks in the bottom of the case. One was obviously from squeezing the head and crank case between vise jaws to get the head and possibly cylinder liner to seat properly! That engine ran fine after repair.
Another was a Brodak .40 that had been crashed and the whole left engine mount was broken off and you could see the crank shaft through the resulting hole. I machined a mandrel that fit into the crankcase where the back plate fit. Then I carefully and slowly built up material to replace what was gone. A little mill work and file work had a new mount that looked like the original. I put it in the bead blaster at work and evened up the outside finish to look like a new one. Reassembled the engine and everything felt fine going back together. I mounted it on my profile Twister/Shark and test ran it, then flew it for a few flights and all was fine. These were extreme cases where this were just right. The poor engine in the photo, though, is ready for the scrap bin I think!!??  But I never make a decision at the field on if something can be repaired or not. I wait until I get it home and even wait until the next day to look at it.
I wonder if MECCOA would honor Fox's old policy of accepting that as a trade in for a new engine at 50% off retail price?????

That was one of the reasons I used Fox engines.  But in all these years only had maybe 3 I sent to Fox for replacement.  Broken rods and cranks I replaced from his parts list.

I asked the question in my combat circle at the Nats this year  " If you could have any Fox engine, which would it be?"  .  We could not think of one!   Good news, I guess, but even in these days of slim pickins, there are still much better choices than Fox.  Now parts to keep the old ones going?  That is a different issue.

I wouldn't mind having a 59 long shaft, with spark ignition.  Not sure what I would use it for, but maybe I could think of something.

I agree with Floyd if there is one engine that MECOA should reintroduce it would be the Fox 59 long Shaft . There are a lot of vintage designs and also repro kits waiting out there! Walter Musciano did his PB-2A scale stunter for the 59 Long Shaft (or an Attwood Triumph another nice looking vintage engine) Regards Gerald

Oh I had my tongue firmly in my cheek when I typed that. I'm just not as slick with the emogees as some of you are.  I know some guys that sent in some REAL losers for trade in, including Cox .049s and got the discount, supposedly!

[/quoteFox 59 longshafts are on Ebay all the time.  If someone made them, how many would really be sold? ARe Henderson made a full size replica some years back and sold them for about $375.  Nowadays, replicas would no doubt be more expensive.

Also, Fox honored the 1/2 price factory price.  I bought several engines, 15 Schneurles, stunt 35s, and a 45 rc with Wenmac, Cox, and McCoy trade ins.

Some of us are crazy optimists and hope to see new engines flooding out MECOA's door. I know reality in today's market means mainly the sale of there purchased stocks but one can only hope ;) I used to be a Fox agent for New Zealand for a short time in the 1990's and found I sold few new engines as so much was available second hand even in New Zealand and people went for the cheapest option :'(. Most just wanted a Fox 35 to say they had a new one in its box like having a Nobler , ST 46 , LA46 or Strega now is a right of passage for keen control line flyers.
I am very happy with the parts I have been able to buy from MECOA especially new 'needed' items like K&B 4520 idle bar plugs #^   Regards Gerald

I know that MECOA does nice work.  I bought a MECOA-built Forster 29 and a Cunningham "Blue Streak" direct from MECOA.

Both were very nice, and ran just fine.

I have ordered twice from them in the last year and I got delivery in three days. I only ordered items that were in stock.

I don't recall ever finding anything that I wanted in stock at MECOA. I did get a couple of MECOA .28's from them, made in Taiwan. They were pretty nice looking engines, but I eventually gave them to Glenn Reach. Never got a word from Glenn on how they ran. Was a bit disappointed in that. Haven't seen Glenn post lately, but hope he's ok.  D>K Steve
