Sportman 29 I need a crankcase gasket for this engine. It has the slant rear intake. Does any body make gaskets for this or does any thing else work. Thanks Steve

I'm not absolutely sure but I think the McCoy 35 gasket fits.

Steve - you can eliminate the gasket by using Loctite Anerobic Gasket Maker.
It's much better than the paper gaskets and allows better fits.
I use it in all my engines - everywhere except the cylinder head.
It works with Diesel, glow and gasoline.
Check out my article in CL world.

Dennis is correct and Bob Z is also correct. Here is a third way, I use gasket materisl available from CarQuest. It comes in a variety of thicknesses. I use the Brown colored one. There is also a thick black fiber type you can get from them.

Another option is cutting the gaskets from thin cardboard, like cereal boxes, subscription cards from magazines, etc. - playing cards also work.
Clean / true up the sealing surfaces by placing a piece of 1200 wet / dry sandpaper on a piece of class, drip a bit of light oil on it and lightly sand the back mating surface of the crankcase to clean it up. High spots will be shinyb, low spots and gouges will be dark. Don't try and fix big defects - the snadpaper just cleans it up and highlights possible problem areas that may leak.
Sometimes you will see that the screw thread holes are higher than the rest of the case- usually from someone overtightening the screws. You may need to take a fine file to them to flatten the protrusion out even with the rest of the case.

When I build engines I make all my gaskets, except head gaskets, from manilla folder stock

Or, I use 3 X 5 file cards! Only because they're handy.

Having piles of old engines and parts let over from 70s, well some back to 40s and looking for gaskets or material
a good friend turned me on to Aluminum tape used in duct work. Available in several thicknesses.
For non fiber type gaskets make sure the cylinder is dry clean stick a piece on top of cylinder and with a #11 blade cut the inside hole. put cylinder upside down on glass and trim outside with #11 or....
Stack them and repeat until desired thickness is reached.
Seems to do good on back plates , I have always put 2 thick on this.
So far on 4-5 engines no problems.
Don't see why it would not work in place of fiber, never tried as I have fiber material and some original gaskets.
Also use the previously mentioned Card stock and manila folders.

Would you believe that good old Perfect is still in business? They still have gasket material, bellcranks, line clips etc. Mike

You'll probably hafta make your own. Backcover gaskets can be made from notebook paper, butcher paper or brown bag paper. heres an easy way cut a square large enough to cover th bNEWack of the case, then glue it on allow to dry and with a NEW xacto blade remove the excess use acetone or MEK to remove it, if u ever need to again

sorry i screwed that up bad. I meant to say "the back of the case. HB~> jim
