High Density Polyethylene Parts
« on: April 06, 2015, 05:56:02 PM »
Several videos on Utube showing how to repurpose this plastic. You can work this stuff just like wood. Here's a handle I cut out after melting down several bottles and making a block of plastic. You have to cut it into small pieces and melt it in thin layers pat it down and add more then fold it and keep squeezing it down to make a block with no air bubbles. You also have to keep pressure on it as it cools if you want a smooth surface because it shrinks allot.   The HDPE doesn't flow as good as I would like, it's about like warm clay and it cools off quick. I've got a mold cut out of plywood and I'm going to try stuffing the hot plastic in it for the next handle. The hard part is cutting the bottles into 1" squares. It's not really cost effective or practical but you can make some pretty cool stuff.
