And when pilots give you a hard time just say "don't make me come up there". And selling cars over the ATIS is a no no.
Well done hope to see you at the contests.

Thanks everyone!! It feels great to see the fruits of my labor start to come to fruition after four years of college, a year and a half working as a pseudo pilot for the trainees and now I passed the academy. It was a very stressful last few days during evals but managed to dig down and post some of the highest scores I've seen and heard.

Over the next week we'll be working on finding a place to live in Longview, packing and moving there. I'm really excited about the next chapter in my life and having a job, and financial security set for the next 33 years

From the list we got, Addison TX was my top choice, but as people from my class failed, Addison dropped off the availability for me to select from. Our next top choice was Longview, which is a little further from my girlfriend's family but still relatively close. She's never lived outside of Oklahoma so this is a big deal for her, and we didn't want to go someplace like Burbank or Bangor, ME.

I'm from Vermont but I've been living here in Oklahoma for the last year and a half

Hey Joe B: Lets fly Sky King to Longview and talk to Matt.

I won't be talking to airplanes for about another month or so. I'll have 3-4 weeks of classroom work before I start on the job training and actually talking to planes. Got to memorize approach procedures, SOPs and LOAs. It'll take me about two years to become a fully certified air traffic controller

Hey Matt!  Truly, I am very happy for you.  I believe we met a couple of years ago at a contest in Indiantown and I believe you were in school in Daytona at the time.  Of course, you know the USAF and USN would have certainly taught you for "free" plus given you three hots and a cot!!   LL~ LL~  Seriously, I wish you all the best.

Congratulations, Matt. I know you will enjoy the work, even if at peak periods it can get very stressful. Between Orchestral playing and teaching math, I spent a few years in ATC and loved the feeling of "having the picture" and moving traffic. I hope you will enjoy it and work to the level and environment you like best. ARTCC and ATCT are different, and each has its advantages. You will doubtless meet some "characters." You will also make some lasting friendships. Way to go with that 97%! - SK

I've been in Oklahoma City since June of 2016. Today we found a house for rent in Longview so for the first time since high school I'll be able to get my own workshop established. I've built two great flying airplanes using just the dining room table, and have two more under construction. I know my girlfriend is going to be thrilled that I'll be able to move the build table off the dining room table.

I still don't think it's sunk in yet that I graduated with an almost perfect score from the academy, where the pass rate is just 55%, and I'm on my way to get my career started in the next week

Good job on your recent accomplishments.  I am sure its just the first of many along the way.  Longview is pretty close to the AR contests and not far from Dallas either.  Plus you can zip over to Shreveport and hit the slots every once in a while. :) :)

You will like Texas.  We dont have state income taxes here!  ;D ;D

I'm really looking forward to the lack of state income tax!!

It's about two hours to the Dallas field, which isn't anything I haven't done in the last 3 years. Hopefully I'll be able to find something in Longview

Hi Matt:

Let me add my congrats to all those who have responded to this thread. I've watched you grow from an enthusiastic youngster to a confident and accomplished young man. You will do very well in life; there is no question of that. This is just one more example of how model airplanes can have a very positive affect on a person's life.

I'm sure your grandfather is also extremely proud of you!

Message to Joe Gilbert: Hey Joe, please fix the title of this thread to reflect the actual spelling of Matt's last name. It's Colan, not Colon...

Thanks Bob!

Speaking of the positive effect of model airplanes, as I was waiting outside the room to run my evals, rather than thinking of scenarios and when to clear somebody for takeoff, working on my pattern traffic, I was thinking of flying at the NATS on top 20 day, looking for perfection after each maneuver. I went in with that mentality, and I ended up with two 100s, a 99 and a 93 on my four evals. Having practiced the pressure of flying in front of judges with everything on the line in contests I think helped keep me calm, sharply focused and ready to kick the crap out of the eval scenarios, which is what I did

Hope you have thanked Grandpa for helping you learn these skills as well as the work ethic.   Now what would you do if you have two planes landing on the same run way at the same time opposing each other?  I know it should never happen, but I remember a flight in which the landing was aborted at almost last second.  The pilot came on the intercom and stated he didn't think it would be advisable landing on another plane that was taking off.
