Masters of the Air
« on: January 27, 2024, 03:46:58 PM »
We just watched the first two episodes of the Apple TV miniseries Masters of the Air.   It's about the 100th Bomb Group in WWII England by the same people that did Band of Brothers.  It seems to be very well done and the flight combat scenes are very realistic and hair raising.  You do have to sign up for Apple TV but I think it will be worth it- I will be able to catch Royals games on it as well since they have gone total streaming-no regular TV....Masters of the Air puts out a new episode every Friday for a total of nine episodes........a break from the shop.  I guess you could cancel your subscription later if you wanted..

I watched the first episode today. I just finished reading Damn Lucky, a memoir about John “Lucky” Luckadoo and his 25 missions with the 100th bomb group. So far in the first episode, a lot of what I’m watching is exactly how Lucky described it in his book. I enjoyed the first episode a lot, can’t wait for the rest!

I will have to see if the lady of the house will let me watch the series.  What with KU Basketball, Chiefs football,  Royals baseball and my Floracing for dirt cars I'm pretty tied up.  For got the daily computer solitaire games. D>K

It’s just ok.  I’m glad someone is making movies of events in the 40’s.  Leave it to Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.  It’s not nearly as good as Band of Brothers and I’m disappointed in a few things though.

Mostly the CGI is just sloppy.  Jurassic Park 30 years ago (1993) had better CGI.

For instance there was a B-17 (obviously) on approach that had to do a go-around, and it changed direction (up) like a Cessna 172 then accelerated like a Mustang, and climbed like an Alaskan Super Cub!  I just didn’t have enough suspension of disbelief to let that one go.

Also, Band of Bros had interviews at the beginning of each episode, with the real life characters.  And there was some narration during the episode, by one of the characters, and mostly about the characters.  Neither of these features were included in this new show and it just doesn’t have the realism or the depth to really grab me and put me on the edge of my seat for the next episode.

It seems as though they were trying to quickly capitalize ($$$) on that kid who did such a good job playing Elvis.

All in all I feel Hanks and Spielberg dropped the ball on this one.  Even Hanks’ Greyhound was 10x better.

Tim,

Keep in mind that Band of Brothers was more than 20 years ago, many of the veterans have unfortunately passed.  I did miss the interviews but understand why they were probably not possible. The interviews also gave the show context in terms of their personal experiences.

Watched a couple of trailers; glad to learn I'm not alone.  It is 2024, after all.

Interviews with the original "Brothers" air frequently on the History & Warfare Channel we get on Samsung (free) TV.
