2013 ARF-OFF Results
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:16:54 PM »
Another ARF-OFF is in the books.  I want to thank Ted Fancher, David Fitzgerald and Brett Buck for generously donating their time and expertise at Saturday's clinic.  It appeared to me that a good deal of valuable stunt info was imparted throughout the day and I hope everyone felt it was worthwhile.

Also, many thanks to the "crew" (Doug Barton, Pete Cunha, Jim Cunningham, Brian Moore, Bob Duncan and others I am forgetting) at the flying site for all of their hard work getting the field in such good shape.

The qualifying rounds consisted of four groups of flyers designated by the colors White, Green, Orange and Yellow.  Everyone who flies also judges.  The Green Group Judges the White Group and visa versa.  The Yellow Group judges the Orange Group and visa versa.

The winner of each group moves on to the Barker Cup Finals in a sudden death fly-off.

Here are the results:

I see you guys downgraded in displacement from PA 65s in a Vector ARF to a RO-Jett 61  ;)

The PA65 is busy living in Systrema so I had to stuff something in there.  That ARF got flown by a bunch of people.

And a big thanks to Jim Aron for yet another otherworldly excursion into the murky, arguably morbid, world of an Uncle Jimby stunt contest.  Morbid in the sense that mere mortals could only come to grips with such conflicting confabulations of aerial chicanery for the  sole purpose of pointing a finger at the guy with the paper bag over his head when threatened with having to do so again in two years unless they succumbed to his imprecations.  If you failed to understand any of the previous sentence you have proven yourself worthy of participating, two years hence, and can expect to hear the sirens' call forthwith (or no less than fifthwith), however, as Jimby divines such victims as doth Carnac and automatically adds your addresses telepathically to the RSVP list for the next adventure.  Be prepared!  Be very prepared!

I think the foregoing has exhausted all of my big word vocabulary so my job here is done.

thanks Jim

It's about the same with the Jett61 as the PA65, with the expected differences. This one had also sprouted vortex generators since the last time. The effect, if any, was below my threshold of detection (although I note that I last flew the airplane 4 years ago). Past experience suggests that it was not as good as the PA40UL version (which is straight and in good trim) in good air, and its better, despite the crookedness, in bad air.

But, apparently not as massive as the ampeaters in Ray Ferkins Pathfinder Profile and/or Uncle Jimby's Vector, both of which I attempted to fly.  Ray's Saturday evening (after which I felt significant twinges of "ouch" in something aft of the first joint of my right hand little finger; which I blamed on the nose heavy line tension of Ray's airplane which I "could not" make turn with my normal wrist and finger inputs...although he flew in quite well, thank you very much) and Jimby's after the festivities of Sunday (during which the twinges of "ouch" aft of the little finger rose to the level of five minutes of level flight...same aircraft systems and similar "feel"!)  After my failed efforts David flew it and declared Jimby incompetent for not having won the event with such a capable machine.

Yours truly shortly slunk off into the night bearing the burden of failure to relate to the electronic age.

Ted

P.s.  The twinges are still there and I can't lift anything normally.  I hope they're all proud of themselves!

p.p.s.  Between the two events I had flown the PA .40UL powered Vector reasonably capably and had not a hint of soreness while flying it with my conventional inputs.  There is something very, very different between the power delivery of these things and the I.C. stuff!

Work obligations kept me away from the actual contest on Sunday but I attended the clinic on Saturday and had several hours of Ted Fancher's attention,  much of it one on one. I want to join in saying thanks to Ted and David and Brett and Jimby and all the others who make this kind of thing happen. We got coaching in theory of flight, stunt design, equipment, engine tuning, flying technique, and of course judging by the experts. While flying for Ted I was thinking, "A week ago this guy was judging the top flyers at the Nats!" What an honor and a privilege. The depth of knowledge these experts have is astonishing, on every aspect of our hobby. Extra cool to be regaled with stories of watching Bob Palmer and Billy Werwage flying against each other in the 1959 Nats, and many others.

I would like to second what was posted above. What I learned was invaluable. Expert Coach #1 critiqued my flight and got to the heart of the matter; "Too much arm movement and wrist rotation"  :! It is going to be a difficult habit to break  HB~> but with time will definitely improve my flying. Thanks!  ;D

I should have gone to the stunt clinic.  It would have been worth the trip.  The ARF-Off may not have been worth the trip.

Now hold on.  There's something suspicious here.  You show Bob Duncan in 11th place with .722954, yet 442.67 / 581 = .761905.  That clearly puts Bob in a solid 10th place.  This is a travesty.

OMG!  You all know that it is nearly statistically impossible for Uncle Jimby to err in this way, so an unbiased investigation shall commence immediately.  Give me a second while I scan for viruses....NO INFECTIONS FOUND....ACCESSING (this may take a few moments)...AHHHHH SO!

After looking at all the evidence, circumstantial and otherwise, there appears to be only one viable conclusion:  SABOTAGE!  And who might the saboteurs be you ask?  Clearly Jerry Arana with the help of the evil Shareen Fancher.  While I was participating in the prestigious Barker Cup fly-off (flying left handed with a backwards turning propeller and still threatening Mr. Fancher's place in the stunt world) ,  Mr. Arana and Mrs. Fancher, who at the time was manning the tabulation desk ALONE AND UNSUPERVISED, hacked my program with the goal of moving Mr. Arana up one place in the standings.  REMEMBER, the much coveted SPAM trophies only go to 10th place and Mr. Arana was sitting in 11th.

This callous disregard for Bob Duncan, the rightful owner of the 10th place trophy, merely shows the depth of depravity of these two despicable individuals.

Reparations shall me made!

Just how much is a Spam can trophy worth, about $1.09? This is a good reason for providing contestants with a calculator and time to allow and require contestants to check the math and sign their name to their score sheets, as is commonly done in golf tournaments (so I've been told).  CLP** Steve
