I don't use the tape and paper thing, but I use drafting tape for masking. I buy it in 3/4" wide rolls and cut the width that I need. I have never had it pull up paint as it seems to have just the right amount of stick to do the job. I do generally wait at least over night before removing it in order for the edge to harden. It looks just like masking tape, but works much better. I only use 3M brand.

I use the Mylar tape from automotive paint stores.  Usually 1/4" wide, then I use 3M "blue" painter's masking tape to stick down the rest of the paper masks (I use 8.5 X 11" computer printer paper because it handles easier).  The Mylar gives a clean edge.

I use 3M Blue (Orange label) Delicate (only use the Delicate orange label tape), to attach the paper and use this in the paper/tape machine. Get this at Home Depot/Lowes/Ace Hardware, etc.
For fine masking, hard to beat the tape supplied by Finesse Pinstriping, Inc.
http://www.finessepinstriping.com/  "The EDGE" is the best.
But I am no expert by any means, maybe others have better suggestions.
