Title: Manx Cat IV engine choice
Post by: pipemakermike on January 07, 2013, 11:26:50 AM
Seeing the pictures and videos I have been moved to complete the one I started a few years ago.  I have now to choose the engine.  My options are:-
McCoy 35 redhead @ 200gm
Fox 35 (the one with the slant plug head) @215gm
OS 40 (a ballraced, ringed, well used one from the mid 70s) @230gm
Irvine 36 @280gm
PAW 35 Diesel @280gm (incl silencer)

Now, I guess that the McCoy or the Fox would be the most authentic and both are relatively short and so would fit easily.  The Irvine is probably too much engine. It is very powerful, rather heavy and quite a bit bigger than the Fox or the McCoy.  I have a leaning to the PAW as, although at first glance it appears a bit heavier than the Fox or McCoy , that weight includes a silencer. I am also very comfortable with the handling of British Diesels. If I use the PAW I would have to recess it about 1/2" further back in the fuselage so the weight might not affect the CG.
The OS is a much loved engine from my RC days and has had an enormous amount of running.  It always handled well but once a std silencer is added it will be quite heavy.

So, what do you think?

I'm gonna say to use the Fox or McCoy because they're smaller and lighter than the other options you're considering. Choose whichever one of the two that runs better for you. The Manx Cat will easily fly with a .19 so you'll have plenty of excess power with anything larger.

I built one around 20 yrs. ago and I used a OS 25 FP and it was more than adequate. If I were to build another a Johnson or Veco 29 would be a likely choice. I have a original kit of the Manx Cat. If anyone knows someone who can make water slide decals I have the one that comes with the kit. I would be willing to lend it for this purpose.

Well the plan says any 0.19 to 0.35ci engine and there appears to be no impediment fuselage wise to sliding the engines weight to and fro to balance the model, so that leaves a huge range of possibilities open.

I like PAW's and the engines weight will be initially offset by the lighter fuel load - just lengthen those bearers though if the big diesel is going to be used and make the top one as long as the bottom.
